Default Cant get connections to get online with new laptop

I just bought a laptop and tonight i tried to connect to the internet with it (i'm on my webtv right now)...so i got it all connected and then i tried to connect and it said something was not connected right. i rechecked the instructions (according to the cd that i got, with Comcast) and everything is connected exactly how it says! But it still won't connect! The yellow light on my modem is flashing (the one that says "pc/activity") and a friend told me that isnt right, but she doesnt know what could be wrong with my connections. I'll go into detail here and maybe somebody can tell me if this is wrong, even though its exactly how the cd said.

My cable wire that i already had with my cable is plugged into the cable box,and the other end (which WAS in the wall) is now plugged into the splitter, and another wire is going from the splitter to the wall. Then i have another wire going from the splitter into my modem. Then my ethernet wire is going from the modem to my laptop. My laptop is plugged in,the modem is plugged in. All systems go. Or so i thought. Anyone know what could be wrong?

Hi Rockchick
Have you restarted all of the equipment? (Your laptop and modem)
It may just need restarting as you are plugging a new device in and it might need to push out a new IP address.

Its all working now! I had a friend come over and she couldnt get it either so after 2 hours we ended up calling Comcast gand over the phone the guy just asked me for my email address and signed me up/in,whatever,and it worked. We didnt do anything,he did it all over the phone LOL Dont ask me why it was a do it yourself kit when you still had to call!
