Default My textbook exchange website for my college - critique please?

Hi all,

I was wondering if I could get a few people to take a look at a website I'm developing:

http://www.rebelstudent.com

I started it about a year ago...but then I found some security issues and other flaws. So I spent about 8 months redesigning it and securing it, etc.

If you could try and crash/hack/screw it up... that would be great!! Feel free to post "dummy" books on there. I'll just delete them later.

BTW, sometimes email messages from the site will go to your spam. I still haven't figured this out.

Thanks a lot!

Looks like your domain is parked on a link farm. Went straight to bunnies.com. I got a nice face full of pop up ads from that (which for some reason Firefox didn't block).

I got bunnies too, from the Rebel Student link, and a "site down for maintenance" from http://www.howtobemotivated.com/

Oh crap. Sorry to all the users who are not in the USA. I totally forgot I had a script that was redirecting all non-usa traffic to bunnies.com. Since it's a local site, I didn't want any precious bandwidth going to users who weren't going to use the site legitimately.

I think you might be able to go to RebelStudent.com - Dixie State College Used Textbook Exchange to circumvent the script.

Niki, yes I do use some Ajax. When you click on the subject, it gets the class list from a database via javascript/php. I found that tizag.com has a very easy tutorial on beginning ajax. It's cool, check it out.

Thanks everyone for taking a look at it!

That's fine that you are turning non-Americans away, but did you really have to redirect to a link-farm that riddles your screen with pop-up ads? Just a tip, you probably should be redirecting to a simple (low bandwidth) page on your site giving a friendly notice of why non-Americans can't access it.

Good tip. I'll probably do that... I didn't know that there were any pop-ups because I have a pop-up blocker. You should install one too probably...

That was the strange thing.....I use Firefox. There always still seems to be plenty of ads that pop-up despite there being a blocker turned on. I get it on quite a few sites.

I agree, you should design a simple page (that resembles your site) explaining that this site is for USA residents only. But don't ever redirect someone to a site with pop-ups regardless if they have pop up blocker or not, it's just bad judgment in my opinion. If you're going to do something like that just send them to Google.

Another possibility would be to add similar site links to the page you create, catering to specific countries... So, in other words, your site caters to the usa, but is there a similar site in Greece or Russia or China, etc... that trades books like you do...? add them to your redirect page, this will help you with your linking strategy for search engine placement...

Hope my advice helps...

It isn't 1998 anymore it's 2008, bandwidth is anything but precious.

In general you also don't seem to have grasped other things that happened since 1998 like web2.0.

Talking about this in terms of “bad news” or “bad judgment by business leaders” seems archaic. It’s like describing World War One as “a serious diplomatic concern.”

Bandwidth IS precious. Have you ever seen a website go down because of the Digg effect? I doubt my site will ever get that many visitors but I'm not paying for that much bandwidth and if I do exceed that limit on my account then there are consequences.

What web 2.0 things could I implement?
