 |  open source social networking website software?
I'd like to know if there is any open source software that would help me build a social networking website? I have programming experience, so I'm looking for a good package to use as a starting point that I can customize to my needs. People have told me to look at Drupal and Joomla, but these look more like content management systems than social networking websites. Thanks in advance for your help! |

Drupal is just what you need for this, did something similar with it a while back, worked really well. There is another system called Elgg I played around with it and just found it to be not very programmer friendly as Drupal. I have no real experience of Joomla to recommend it. I am not an expert but if you need help with Drupal related stuff, just give me a PM. |

Drupal can definitely be run as a portal/social network. Joomla more geared to work as a CMS but there are plugins that provide "social" features. AS good commerical alternative is PHPFox: phpFoX » Trusted Social Network Solutions |
