Default using google calendar offline

I like to use google calendar as a way of organising appointments etc. However the only thing that I don't like about it is that I am unable to view it / use it unless I connect to the internet. Is there a way to use it off line, maybe with it updating when I then go online? Any advice greatly appreciated.

I think you have to use another calender offline.
But you can do something to sync them.

That's what I thought, which is a pity really as I like the way google calander lets you have different calanders together and the different colors are so useful. Thank you for responding to my post.
