I've been collecting web domains for years, since I was about 17, almost a decade now. I don't even want to say how many I've accumulated. Time to start developing them. Honestly, I am scared to death of the process, it seems entirely overwhelming. I'm going to sign up for one year of hosting with Dreamhost, and I just bought a book on learning Python. Don't listen to anyone talking about php / perl or ruby. I've researched it to death and Python is the place to start for learning web programming. Hey, I just found out you can use the code PRICESLASH to get $50 off on Dreamhost!! Total: $119.40 (1 year of hosting with 9% discount) - $50.00 (PRICESLASH "$50 Discount!") Due Now: $69.40 [paid] Welcome to DreamHost! YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CHANGING YOUR DNS SERVERS TO: ns1.dreamhost.com, ns2.dreamhost.com, ns3.dreamhost.com! And so it starts.. |

Sure Python is good for learning and developing things completely on your own, and I really dislike PHP. BUT! There is such a tremendous amount of PHP code available(whether in the form of tutorials, free scripts, open source software...etc) that you shouldn't rule it out straight away. Just food for thought. I'm just curious, what is your domain portfolio like?

I'll be updating this thread as kind of a personal journal. I realized that the process would be easier than I thought when I developed meanmails in one day a few months ago, after I thought it would take weeks. At this point though, I would settle for generating any income period from the domains. Maintaining 600 domain registrations easily costs more than a monthly luxury car payment.

Wow. 600 domains? And there I was thinking I was cool by owning more than one... *sigh* Good luck with your portal farming, Dan!

I'm sorry, I must be new to this. I don't see the connection between collecting domains and web programming. There are auction sites out there for collectors to post their domains and sell at top prices similar to ebay. What exactly are you planning on doing and developing? Any case, I agree with Yazkman, if your going to put in effort and code origional stuff then python is better but lots of free php code to gank. |

I don't mean to say that there aren't any out of the box solutions, there are a few. But as a rule if you're going to grab scripts you should know the language they are written in so you can modify them to suit your needs accordingly. Also so you have the option of being original.

So you haven't made a cent from them? I'd point them to a parking service straight away so they will at least pay a little. Andrew

oh I've been getting into domaining too, but so far...no good. I'm now just trying to develop the sites, rather than just trying to sell them. With all the mobi's going off, I thought I would no problem selling itgames.mobi but no such luck - lol! Domaining is a quite hard, lots of research is needed. Seems like domain flipping is the new thing at the moment. I think I will just do the whole thing as a bit of fun once in a while now. I don't seem to have the gift of the gab on this one. I'm going to try that pricelash code as well. If it works, I will KISS YOU |

Best of luck with your sites - I can't wait to see what you do with them and maybe what inspired you to get each domain I don't know if you've seen this: Free eBook: Preface : Learn Success With Randy Brown but it has interesting ideas on how to maximise the effect of content submitted by users. |

I worked on bestconsultingever.com for a few hours last night. This is basically going to be a holdings company? The design house that runs all the other domains. Just a first draft - need to fill in content. Check it out.. Best Consulting Ever |

Well, I didn't get any of that stuff done over the weekend - signed a new lease and moved instead. Man, moving takes FOREVER. On a side note, I may be addicted to buying domains. Please note the following instructions with respect to your Registration of DomainName modzine.com through SnapNames. |

Good questions. I'll definitely be using various templating systems for the different sites. For example, the last domain I mentioned, modzine.com, will most likely be a wordpress or pligg site. Different solutions for different sites. Only a couple will be programmed from scratch because that gets expensive fast. |

I am currently installing Php Junkyard. Here is the admin demo. Demo1 / demo to test. I'll probably make the BCE task list public on this thread after installation. |

There are a ton of open source php scripts available for use, and I know enough php to modify scripts when needed. I wish they were all written in Phyton. I did just find a nice Phyton CMS system - Skeletonz CMS - that I'm looking forward to trying out at some point. If I write anything from scratch myself it will be in Phyton, not php. I doubt I will have to write much from scratch to develop the domains though. I'm certainly not making any commitment to making every domain Phyton based. Learning Phyton would take a while, then I'd have to write various CMS structures from scratch, etc. It would likely take years; I don't want to put off developing the domains that long. |

Python always seemed useful because it was so lightweight and flexible, I've been following it for a few years. But never really picked it up. Right now I'm focusing on php/mysql just because it is still more mainstream. So all your domains are going to have content that you update over time to? They're not going to be Set it and forget it? If so more power to you I'm definitely interested to see how it goes |
