| My dedicated server is completely down right now, so I call tech support and the message tells me that there is a high call volume and to avoid an extended wait I should call back another time. NP, I think, I'll wait. Speakerphone is my friend, no biggie. Then the call hangs up on me. Huh? I call back thinking it must be some sort of mistake and get the same deal, hangs up right up on me. To avoid an extended wait please call back another time. Click. What unbelievably terrible service.

| Weren't they recently bought out by another company? I know I originally considered 1and1 but when I saw a headline about the buyout I changed my mind. That has always been the precursor to service death for all my webhosts in the past. |

| Don't mean to send people away from here, but there's been a very recent discussion on the other forums I frequent: DO NOT use 1and1! And it was started by a member named Dan Conspiracy?

| Yeah 1and1 does suck. I got realed into it too and it's terrible. I can recommend a good host though. DreamHost is who I use and they are great. The main reason why they are so good is they are employee owned. 2 or 3 guys started it 10 years ago and they still work just as much as anyone they've hired. They also offer 5TB of monthly bandwidth and 500GB of storage with tons of extra goodies, so it's definitley worth checking out. I've never had one single problem with them. Not trying to spam or anything, but if you click the link in this post you can signup with my promo code which will get you a free lifetime domain name and $10 off the setup fee. Just incase, make sure you enter TRIBUTEK123 when you sign up. Yes I get $97 for referral, but $25 of that goes to the free lifetime domain and $10 discount. Anyway, goodluck with 1and1. Hope you don't get screwed over too terribly bad.

| 5TB transfer and 500GB storage for $8 a month? That's some pretty ridiculous overselling going on, there. I think I'd much rather pay a little more for a lot less, and actually know that if I want to use it I will be able to. I sell hosting too, starting at a couple of bucks a month. If you have problems, you can come back and cuss me out right here if you want. No dissatisfied customers so far, though. Check the link in my sig. (as for 1&1 - yeah, I get an awful lot of people transferring to me from them, and they always make it hard...)

| ...good God, they sure do know how to talk the talk. They make it sound as though overselling isn't an inherently bad thing... ... ...which, of course, it isn't. Way to provide a rebuttal to a nonexistant argument - it's very easy to convince someone of something that everyone knows is true already. I don't think I've ever seen such a display of straw-manning in my life. Every web host oversells. Without exception. Nobody expects otherwise. Some, however, oversell more than others. Some oversell a lot more than others. Some oversell to ridiculous extremes, and then use the excuses that you'd normally use if you were overselling to the usual standard. Along with a couple of points that just don't make sense... Quote: Just imagine if you went to a big house party at your cousin Jose’s, and the idiot only has ONE bathroom! I mean, how can he expect to have 50 people in a heavy drinking and eating environment for four hours with just ONE bathroom?! What if two people have to pee at the same time?! Or even worse… Poop? Clearly, if you’re going to have a group of people, you better make DARN sure you’ve got (at least) one bathroom per person! Or else, you’re just another CRAZY OVERSELLER! This is a good argument! Shame it applies to parties and not web hosting! But, just to humour DreamHost, let's correct this analogy: you're not having a party for fifty people, you're having a party for a hundred and fifty. Know what you're looking at now? Puke on your staircase. Yummy. This article reads like the wino who says that a glass a day is good for the circulation, while necking two bottles in rapid succession. Gah. I could go on. I don't think I will; I'm done. DreamHost over-oversell and say that it's okay, most of the rest of the webhosting industry oversell less because they know it's a bad idea, draw your own conclusions.

| I think in the end most web hosts will be able to get disk space and bandwidth for around the same price (unless they buy really cheap disks that are liable to break down or an unreliable connection), so the price you pay is really a good indication of how much they're expecting you to use. Any limits they sell you are just their way to stop a few customers from overloading the servers. |

| Most shared hosts do oversell. It's how they manage it that counts.

| You have your taskbar on the side. Like me. ...isn't it so much nicer? Tell me, have you ever tried rotating your monitor 90 degrees? It makes so much more sense that way.
