Domains to go non-English: will it cause internet havoc? | APC Magazine

I foresee several problems. First, it will make terrorists that much harder to track, because now they'll be able to use Arabic domains.

Second, it will open up a whole new generation of ads, phishing, and spyware. Much harder to block Chinese URLs!

Lastly, it may serve to segregate the global community, and remove the need for foreigners to learn English. Say what you will about English, and its reasons for dominance, but I would rather it remain the main international language over Arabic and Chinese.

On the other hand, there are some advantages.

- a whole host of new domains available for purchase
- the potential to increase the size of the internet, for countries that don't know English
- more people using the internet, which means more people appreciating its value

There are already non-english webpages. The unsegregated world you are thinking of doesn't exist. There are for example more nonenglish entry's in wikipedia than english ones.
