Wordpress, Joomla, Geeklog Which blog - CMS software do you use and recommend? I am a huge fan of WordPress but from time to time I look at the other software available for blogging and content presentation. What do you like or dislike? Why? I've recently looked at Joomla and Geeklog. I do not believe I will move from WordPress at this time. |

GeekLog gets my vote. It's fast, secure, and bleeding-edge. OpenID support in the next release. Incredibly Google-friendly. Highly extensible, very flexible, and can be used to create just about any type of website. Joomla - it's a nice system, but working with it makes me want to swear. It's patronising and inefficient, as well as horribly insecure out of the box. Having said that, if you've got a lot of time to spare, you can make a pretty decent website from it. |

For a new user, I would recommend the free WordPress at WordPress.com - you can always move to a custom domain, and your own host as expertise and need grows. WP has a massive user community, which means lots of templates, lots of plugins, lots of updates and lots of people who can help you if you get stuck. Joomla is great if you want a more customised site, but it takes a fair bit of effort to get it setup right. I would only really suggest this for professional sites with specific content requirements. It can do anything, but it's harder to do it. |

If you've on Windows, check out DotNetNuke- a free open souce CMS. It's got blogging capabilities but it is mostly designed for 'portals', i.e. complete web sites with pages, rss. forums etc.

GeekLog does require a bit of technical knowledge, but not too much. You can give it a go on the demo site at geeklog.net. If you were thinking of giving it a go, I'd recommend waiting a couple of weeks for the next version to come out, which will eliminate the need to edit a config.php file to set it up. It's gotten some money from Google to improve, and the next version should be a little more user-friendly. |

Thanks to all who commented on this thread. I am still committed to WordPress but think I will follow cavemanjoe's recommendation and try the new version of Geeklog when it is released.

Hi Gene, I went through a bunch of Blog/CMS software recently, and I eventually settled on Textpattern. For me, it was the most clear and intuitive to use, while still remaining highly flexible and customisable (there are plenty of plugins to choose from). It's XHTML and CSS standards-compliant, seems good for SEO, and the forms and articles features are really handy once you get the hang of them. Took a little while to learn the textpattern tags, but they really are very straightforward, and I found them more intuitive than the Wordpress setup. Worth a look anyway! Best, Jacob |

I use Wordpress and I'm glad it's the program I chose when I first started my website last month. I'm not too savy when it comes to web design, so the ease of Wordpress was extremely helpful. Considering how much support Wordpress has within it's community (technical support, free themes, free plugins, etc), and it's easy to see why it's a great choice.
