Dear Steve, Firstly, I apologise for the length of this post, but I couldn't make it any shorter. I will understand fully if you have to delete me. I have only been examining this site (found through John Wesley's blog site) for about four days. Still, I have learnt more and gained a better sense of direction than in the past fifteen years. As soon as funds allow, I will send you a donation as a thankyou. This post is actually in answer to an archived blog on finding your purpose in life; a testimonial to the effectiveness of the exercise. Showing the hidden self is scary, as it is personal and not well written, but sharing the exercise is all I can think of to show its value. What is my true purpose in Life? You capitalised the word life - that says something about what life means to you. What life means is probably related to your own meaning for existing. I don't know what my purpose is. I don't know why I'm here. I don't believe it matters - life is meaningful for its own self. Still, I have had a calling in life but never been able to find out what it is. I have achieved nothing with my life, been always at A, struggling to reach Z. To me, not being able to find my purpose in life is the reason for A not reaching Z. A is the planning and execution while Z is the result and my death. So the calling must be something to do with a lifelong endeavour. I have searched many paths, seeking enlightenment, knowing closeness to God and a Godly life is the singlemost important element to my purpose in life. I have always had absolute conviction of a God being part of the very fabric of the universe, but no faith in what humanity calls God. To me that is a manmade, false God, not remotely related to the true sense of God or Godliness. The world's wisdom makes it clear what is truly God and Godly, one's own heart answers all questions of God, that presence permeates all with a physical expression of its being. If this is so, then my purpose in life isn't about finding God or being a Godly person, only that my purpose somehow belongs with or is required by a Godly presence. what is my purpose in life, then; I don't know, it is never where I look. Where have I looked? To religion, to ethics, philosophy, history of mankind, and seeking daily signs that would give me a clue, such as finding this site or coming across a book I wasn't looking for. Have I found the answers there? No, but the permeating presence always seems close and to know I'm looking; yet I remain blind. I am blind, then. The third eye is not functioning as it should, perhaps, and suffering has shut my physical eyes to my own potential and the outside world. Closed eyes cannot see to find one's purpose. How to open all my eyes? I'm already doing it, not in soul searching but in re-examining the world, my character and circumstances. My purpose in life must be there somewhere. What is it? More circles, like the cycles of life and madness and learning. Yet the circle is the most important aspect of this universe- birth, life, death and recycling to a new circle. You are a believer, a creator, a failure. You are not a greatly skilled artist and writer, you've lost that talent, yet still live with it's imperative, undeniable urge... That's where you finally cry? the unfulfilled, not very good artist and writer is what makes all your life useless? That is the answer, then? Your true purpose in life is to serve through creative outlets? To become the artist you were born to be, whether mediocre or great in talent. |

That's flat-out beautiful. Thank you for that post. I think by God you mean what I think of as reverence--a sense that everything in the universe is beautiful, including failure, because it is integral to to overall pattern. Is that close, or am I way off track? Thanks for noticing my post, I've only just come back to this part of the site. Yes, you're right - that's precisely what I meant and you said it better than I could express it myself. Consequently, I'm the more enlightened for your simple truth. I don't believe in God as a religious concept, but as a state of consciousness, an intregal element of the universe as a whole. For me, God is a living, ever-evolving energy - always present in all things. Peace and prosperity to you. |
