"Random article" feature has technical glitch

I often click on the "random article" link for inspiration. Since yesterday, clicking on that link, instead of producing a random article, consistently results in delivery of the blog post about the hummingbird (not that I have anything against hummingbirds, but variety is nice!). Was this an intentional experiment or just a glitch?

Le Roi 06-08-2011 02:44 PM

Lol, that sounds funny. I went to test it myself, but I couldn't find the random feature.

Happy Giraffe 06-08-2011 02:52 PM

The "random article" feature only appears on the pages for the forums. It's on the left hand side near the top, in a box that includes the following links: Steve's blog, products, free newsletter, audio, archives, and random article.

Ah ok! It used to be on the main website but it must have being removed.

Heh, yeah, me too, it points only to the hummingbird post. Perhaps a glitch in it just make it point to the last post.

Sorry about the signature. I'd been linking to the book since I joined the fora a year ago, and didn't realize it was a problem. The link to the blog was a new addition. Is it OK to keep that? All of the content is free and informational. I looked over the rules, and as far as I can tell, it meets them.

Yup linking to the blog site is fine, it was the book link that was a problem. The way you have it now is fine. :)

Your sig was probably not caught earlier since you haven't posted much on here.

We hungry giraffes have to spend most of our time browsing.:d

Savage 06-08-2011 04:52 PM

The random article feature works fine for me, but some browsers have a problem with it because they cache the page the first time and then serve up the same page each time thereafter.

Happy Giraffe 06-08-2011 05:09 PM

I just tried Firefox, which I don't normally use, and had the same problem. My usual browser, which continues to return this error, is Internet Explorer 9. Perhaps some others will read this and report if they are having similar problems.

It's stuck on the hummingbird article for me too, and I'm using Safari on an ipad.

Adam Elkins 06-09-2011 08:57 AM

Same problem, and i'm clearing the cache each time to be sure. (Safari 5.0.5 on Mac OSX 10.6.7)

Adam Elkins 06-09-2011 09:08 AM

I've just spotted it's actually going back to the blog front page, Steve Pavlina’s Personal Development Blog each time rather than an actual article.

It's been broken for over a week for me, on multiple computers. It always shows your newest article. Two weeks ago, it still worked.

Edit: more accurately, it's doing what Adam Elkins described.

Odd that it still works for me. It could be a problem with a new caching plugin installed last month. I might just get rid of this feature entirely because it breaks often, and it doesn't add that much IMO.

cacheborn 06-09-2011 02:11 PM

I am using Chromium and it's humming bird every time. :)

I would miss it, and would appreciate if it were to be repaired.

Me, too.

Andrew Brunelle 06-10-2011 03:03 AM

Still not working, it is going to your most recent post every time, even on Chrome.

Savage 06-10-2011 03:40 AM

It's either kill the random article link or kill the caching plugin, and at this time the caching is more critical, as the site would run a lot slower without it.

RIP: random article

For more randomness, come to Vegas. :)

OstapBender 06-11-2011 12:40 AM

I only registered here for the purpose of saying that I miss that function :(

edit: and also to say that my consciousness did a pretty good job coming up with this site in my subjective reality, lol

How sad, I really liked the random article feature!

(ie, I just went looking for it and was rather confused to find it's been gone for at least 3 weeks. Which goes to show how often I use it - but I really liked it.)

Theobinomy 08-05-2011 08:30 PM

Missing random link

Think there will ever be a solution to the problem? My personal development hasn't been as fast as steves. so often the older posts I find valuable, if only to remind myself of truths I already knew.

You could try something semi-random instead --

Google "site:stevepavlina.com/blog" and a random keyword that seems applicable to whatever is going on, like diet, efficiency, productivity, overwhelmed, relationships etc. It's not as random, but may be helpful.

Good suggestion.
