First, let me make this clear: I'm not talking about an actual free consultation with the worldly, physical manifestation of Steve Pavlina. That's available, but it's not free. But you can get a consultation with the unworldly, non-physical manifestation of Steve Pavlina for free, and he gives excellent advice, too! Here's how: If you're like me, you've read every article on Steve's site multiple times. That reading has sunk into your subconscious and taken root there. Through visualization meditation, you can access all that knowledge conveniently and succinctly, as if you had a direct link to Steve in your mind. (...And who knows: maybe you really do!) Steve has mentioned a similar technique before here, except he's accessing his future self. You can use meditation to access present-day Steve in the same way. (Maybe you can even book a consultation with future Steve -- I haven't tried that!) If you're inexperienced with visualization meditation, I offer a free download of a visualization meditation here which guides you through the process of meeting a spirit guide; you can simply ask to meet with Steve instead. This idea came to me this morning while I was meditating. I was wondering whether I should pull together the fee for a consultation with Steve, since I'm having some trouble effectively promoting my novel. I have tried a lot of obvious things, even holding promotions on my web site, but haven't had much luck. To my surprise, I found myself falling deeper into meditation, and began talking with Steve himself about it. He gave me a one-sentence action item that was blindingly obvious in retrospect, and I thanked him profusely. :-) I will definitely be booking more consultations with Steve this way: it's easy to fit into my schedule, takes just a few minutes, doesn't have to be arranged ahead of time, and is completely free. Oh, and unworldly Steve gives excellent advice -- perhaps even better advice than "real" Steve, since unworldly Steve has access to all your memories and everything else your subconscious has squirreled away. :-) |

Sure. He advised me to do more research into what the successful ebook writers are doing -- in particular, to seek them out, befriend them, and get a sense of their vibes. That way, I can become a match for their vibrations, and the ideas and opportunities for more sales will start to flow. He's talked a lot about this kind of thing recently, but I hadn't considered applying it to my problem before I consulted with him. :-)

Andreas -- Thanks for asking. But in fact a LOT of kindle ebooks are offered for free; and a great many for .99. The most successful are usually in the one to three dollar range. Many people who buy kindle ebooks are looking for quick, inexpensive entertainment, and for $.99, they often make impulse purchases of whatever looks interesting. Besides, since my offering is only 80 pages (really a novella), I didn't think it reasonable to offer "full price" of $3. Once the whole book is finished, I plan on offering it in higher-priced forms, including a physical format. |

It's about a woman who wrote novels in her spare time and self-published them as e-books, selling them for $0.99 online.... and she now has a 7-figure income. Obviously a lot of people find value in her e-book novels. If something is as cheap as a dollar, people are more likely to read it, because the "risk" is virtually non-existent. And if people like it, its popularity can spread like wildfire.

Well, well, well! Wow, Rachelle. Thank you so much for that article. It was quite enlightening; and it ended up being the jumping off point into a sea of research about the Kindle store, CreateSpace.com, and the overall Kindle book business model. Perhaps my opinion of perceived value wasn't as aligned with truth as I thought it was. But though the process of researching all of this (including Amanda Hocking's incredible story) makes me a lot more excited to self publish in the future, and a lot more curious about how good it could get. Thanks again, Rachelle. I can't help but feel that this thread was somehow fated.

Andreas, you should check out the blog of J.A. Konrath. He's another author doing exceptionally well with low priced e-books sold through Amazon for the Kindle and other platforms such as the Nook from Barnes and Noble. He prices his books at $2.99 with the occasional 99 cent offering. His blog is called A Newbie's Guide to Publishing, and used to be focused on how to get published traditionally until he discovered how lucrative self-publishing e-books can be. His posts over the last year are particularly enlightening. One of his main ideas is that the value of a book should never be determined by price...but by profit earned.
