Hey guys, here's an essay I put together. Most of the ideas come from posts I found on here, and the responses people gave me. It's a work in progress, but I thought I'd post what I have so far. The Dream of Life The ultimate goal of life is to fulfill your destiny. Life is the journey, or the path that you follow in order to reach that culminating point. Destiny, although simple and pure in essence, is not easy to reach. Therefore, it is essential to take a step back, place destiny to the side, and concentrate on navigating your personal path. First, on your journey, you must discern between fate and destiny. They are often considered one and the same, but you, the spiritual warrior, must discern between the two. Destiny is what we are here on earth to achieve, it is the light that guides you upon your path. Fate on the other hand, can show up at any time, and in any form. It is, metaphorically, the hand that redirects us when we loose sight of our path. Often times, fate may appear to be cruel, but remember that it always has the best intentions at heart. Instead of feeling sadness, or anger when something bad happens in your life, redirect your thoughts, and focus on your ultimate goal. If you consider every bad event as fate’s way of nudging you back on to the path, you will think of them in a positive light. Imagine going on a trip. You leave your house and make plans to meet your friends at the beach in four hours. You can already feel the warm sun against your bare back, and the cool water brushing up against your legs. You want to get there as fast as possible, so you make sure to stock up on enough gas to last the entire ride there, so you won't have to stop for gas. Much to your dismay, you somehow get lost along the way. After 20 minutes of trying to find your way back on track, you spot a sign that tells you there’s a gas station at the next exit. If you go to the gas station, you can ask the attendant for directions. However, the next exit is 20 minutes away, and going to a gas station is a pain. Although you may not be aware of this, that sign is Fate, and it is up to you to decide how you are going to react. You can either accept it as a gift, or deny it. You ultimately decide to take it. It was a pain to go to that gas station, but without that sign(fate), you may never have found your way to the beach. You are responsible for realizing your destiny. You can never place the blame on anyone else, but yourself. Everything that is needed to reach your destiny is available to you, and it is up to you to cease the moment. Think of destiny as your inheritance. What you inherit is rightfully yours, and your destiny belongs to you. Think of knowledge as the will, the document that solidifies your inheritance. You haven’t always known about the will, in fact it’s been hidden in a dusty, old attic for years. Think of the events leading up to your discovery of the will as fate. They may have been disguised as inconveniences, and miss-directions, but it is not until you receive the will, that you realize the importance of those events. Every time something negative happens to you, take a step back and examine it from another perspective. Ask yourself why has this happened? Ask where it might fit into the puzzle: fate (events), knowledge (the will), destiny (the inheritance). This analogy illustrates the importance of accepting fate. One wrong mistake, one step in the wrong direction, could have prevented you from ever finding the will and discovering your inheritance. You may have heard the metaphor “life is but a dream” many times. But have you ever considered that it might be true? Many people say, “ I can feel, and see, and touch the world and it feels real to me.” Well, if reality is what you can feel, and touch, then it is no different than a dream. A dream is only as real as it lasts, but can’t you say that about life too? Just like film projected onto a screen gives the illusion of reality, life is also an illusion. You may wonder where you fit in the film metaphor. Are you the guy who stands in the back of the room putting the film in the projector, one of the characters, or the movie watcher? The truth is that you are none of those. They are all limited. In fact, you are the cameraman. You control the direction of the film. You observe, create, and make your dreams become reality on screen. However, what you’ve created isn’t true reality, and the movie then becomes a dream within a dream. You are not separate from the world it isn’t really “out there”. You are connected to everything, and everything is connected to you. In this life you have to remember to account for time, but not necessarily understand it. Lets go back to the film metaphor again. When you watch a film projected on to a screen, you are given the illusion that there is past, present and future. You observe it much like you observe life and time in the “real world”. In fact, the film only exists in the NOW, in the present. If you were given access to the projector room, and shown the film, you would see it for what it really is. There is no past, or future, because it already exists, on film from start to finish. Life is a maze, in which the destination is sometimes unclear. Often times, this maze may give us the illusion that there is no destination. But if you stepped out of the maze, and looked down upon it, you would see that there is in fact an end. When you step out, you were experiencing a spiritual awakening, and saw past the dream. Since there is no past or future, a thousand possibilities have to exist all at once. You can’t experience all possibilities because they are in all different places. Your thoughts and your actions determine the probability that you will experience a certain “path”. Think of the world as a giant computer simulation. You are an avatar in the simulation, and you are traveling through the three-dimensional space within the computer. For one person there can be millions of potential realities, and each point branches off. Even though the paths you choose appear brand new to you, they were already in existence in the data space. So, even though you chose one branch to go down, there may be thousands of other ones that you never experienced. Several realities exist simultaneously, and have always existed unchanged at each point, but you only have a certain probability of reaching each one. In other words, the Whole is the Sum of the Parts. In Bill Viola’s essay, Will there be Condominiums in Data Space, he says “If you want to make a jigsaw puzzle, you must first start with the whole image, and then cut it up. The observer, working backwards into the system, has the point of view that he or she is building things up, putting it together piece by piece. The prophet Mohamed has said, "All knowledge is but a single point—it is the ignorant who have multiplied it." The following quote is extracted from a post online: “In detachment lies the wisdom of uncertainty…in the wisdom of uncertainty lies the freedom from our past, from the known, which is the prison of past conditioning. In our willingness to step into the unknown, the field of possibilities, we surrender ourselves to the creative mind that orchestrates the dance of the universe.” If understood from this perspective, the believer of existentialism can rest easy. When one realizes the true nature of reality, the feelings of despair often associated with existentialism are replaced with hope and excitement. What ever your belief is: “God”, “Consciousness”, “Awareness”…we can see that we weren’t abandoned after all. Although you have free will and are free to make your own choices, “God” was there for you before you even began your journey. God, or awareness, wants to make sure that you reach your final destination. In a dream, we perceive everything and everyone as separate from us. When we awaken, we realize that it was a dream, and everything in the dream came from our consciousness. Your mind creates an illusion that you are separate from the world, but don’t let it fool you. Everything is connected. You have direct influence over your environment, and your dreams thus have the power to create reality. Everybody has different goals, but there are several goals that are essential on the path to realizing ones destiny: (In no peticular order) 1. Find out who you are 2. Learn 3. Get beyond your point of view 4. Strive for Enlightenment 5. Find your soulmate 6. Question Everything 7. Seek truth (The essay isn't finished yet. Like I said, it's a work in progress. If you want me to add anything to it send me a private message, or leave a post.) It still needs a lot more before it's finished, so your thoughts and ideas would be awesome!!! You assume the existence of and belief in destiny. Perhaps you could address the idea that there is no such thing as destiny or fate? I.e., why do you believe the ultimate goal of life is fulfilment of destiny?

Destiny is different for everyone. Without destiny, without something to work towards I wouldn't want to live. I'm not sure what destiny is, all I know is that it exists. Maybe it is the ultimate realization of one's true identity or maybe it's abandoning the ego perspective and becoming one with awareness......who knows.

| I'll add my 2 cents - I believe we picked our destiny when we came to Earth. We chose it ourselves before entering these bodies. So we do have a destiny, but it was predetermined by us. We came to Earth for a reason, we did not just pop in one day for no apparent reason. We just sort of forget it.

I like that idea, but I only have one critism of it. If it's true that we chose our own destiny before birth, what about the people who were never born, or died right after birth. Why would someone choose that destiny for themselves?

I'm also curious about your reason for writing this essay. Is it simply a statement of your belief, or is it intended to be instructional? It seems to be the latter, yet written with a tone of authority, despite admittedly being a collection of other people's ideas. Though that's ok for a summary, as long as people reading it think about it for themselves... Perhaps you could expand on that list of 7 goals at the end? Make it a series of essays. And if you include the why of each goal, as well as the how, then your summary would be adding something new to what's aready out there on this topic. Quote:

hey mark, thanks for your response I actually wrote it for myself lol.....I had so many ideas floating through my head and I needed a way to organize all my thoughts. Since all the ideas came from people on this site, I thought I'd post them on here. I used the word destiny, because it's the most traditional word, but purpose would have worked just aswell. I still have quite a bit more to add, so I will eventually expand on the 7 goals. I don't want to write anything else until I understand it better...so I'm waiting until I acquire more information. |
