| I thought it would be a good question to respond to all of the criticisms against Steve with the question, "Well what makes YOU so special? What have YOU done that is worthy of millions of people reading about YOUR life every month? And if you are so special, why does your blog only have 50 visitors a month!?!" I don't think many people in here realize exactly what they are demanding from Steve or anyone when they ask for more interesting blog articles, or better stories or better life lessons that make you really go Ooooohh and ahhh. You can't just make up life lessons that have deeply impacting implications for others, you have to experience the pain of them yourself first. And we are each only so lucky/cursed to experiences so many of those in our lifetimes. I just think the thread title "Where's the genius content, Steve?" is incredibly selfish and narcissistic when you consider what you are demanding of him. I don't know. Me right now = I just wanted to make this thread. Last edited by Curtis2011; 11-05-2010 at 04:26 AM. |

Meh *shrugs* that was a really stupid thing for someone to say, they were probably jealous or maybe they were just a fan of some of Steve's older posts, I don't know. I don't even know what he said in the forum, something like "where is all the genius content" tells me all I need to know about this person (how obnoxious is his use of the word genius?), but just to play devil's advocate for a second I will say that I can see how it is possible for a reader to "stray away" because his blog has most certainly transformed in many ways, but then again he is a living breathing person so it would only be normal for him to change and if his blog is genuine it would reflect that (which it does). I wouldn't really put down anyone by saying "where are all your fans at" though and all that mess...popularity or mass appeal really has nothing to do with a person's intellect *fake cough* Sarah Palin *fake cough*. Many intelligent people that could easily be motivational/transformational speakers are simply not too business savvy - they have very meaningful words to share with this world but no medium or platform to do it with. |

Wasn't this already argued about... in the original thread Curtis and wasn't it already determined that it was rude to demand? He he! Edit: I now see you just wanted to create a thread about this...wasn't quite sure why this wasn't posted in the original thread itself?

| Seth Godin's book Linchpin challenged my thinking more than any number of other books that have more radical theories about Life, the Universe, and Everything. This thread reminds me of that book. While this thread is a challenge (and I think a good one), on the other side of it, do you (anyone reading this thread) believe you have genius content? Godin argued that you do. Everybody. That if you tap that creative side, you, in your current life experience, can put out something amazing. Not cure cancer, necessarily, but something that breaks out of the everyday. I think it's an inspiring idea. And Godin builds on that to say that's what the world needs; people to break out and let out their genius content, so to speak. So thanks for this thread Curtis. The people we need to ask "Where's the genius content?" to is ourselves. |

People have just noticed a decline in the quality of content Steve is posting - I don't think this is narcissistic. To be honest, I believe that Steve is doing this intentionally - perhaps he's thinking of branching out and doing other things..maybe he's sick of the website. All I know is that I have noticed a change in the types and amounts of blog posts. To say that I am not disappointed would be a lie, but I really don't think that Steve is unaware of this. I'm sure he has a few ideas up his sleeves - he's a smart guy and nothing he does is uncalculated. Can't wait to see what his secret future venture is that he's been talking about. It sounds exciting.

Well I think the main cause is just that if people were interested in his previous content about say, business or polyphasic sleep, but then he transfers to writing about something like travel which they don't like, they see it as a "decline" in the quality, when really it is just a change of subject to something they aren't interested in. I can relate to this. Personally I dislike travelling and dislike reading about traveling even more, so I don't care for his blog posts about travelling. However, there seem to be a lot of people in the world who do enjoy travelling and such blog posts are probably a "breath of fresh air" for them to see.

Steve isn't blogging about traveling. He isn't blogging much at all recently, and he already said he wouldn't be posting much about traveling anymore because he thought it was uninspired and didn't get much feedback. It sounds like he figured that out without anyone telling him directly, and why wouldn't he?

He also has a blog that is aimed at "personal development", which is eexxxttreeemmeellyy vague. I'm sure he casts a net that attracts a very diverse audience. I operate a blog on real estate. If you're not interested in real estate, you're not going to ever come to my blog, period. But with Steve, he can really write about everything and anything (well almost) as long as it's related to bettering yourself and it would fit the category of his blog. So imagine keeping a blog like this for years. You're going to come up with blog posts that attract a certain audience, then you'll start to branch off into another area and probably lose some of your former audience while gaining new people, meanwhile hanging on to your most loyal fans. It's really not just an issue that is unique to Steve Pavlina, many people in his field run into this problem. |

Some people felt that the quality of Steve's blogs was declining from their previously top-notch standard. More people piled on, including myself. I thought of Steve as a business selling Brand X. Suddenly, there seemed to be less and less of Brand X and more of Brand Y and sometimes empty shelves. Steve, however, is a person (maybe a dream person, but that's another story I am glad it happened because instead of being frustrated that Steve is no longer providing much of the good old Brand X, I think I understand why, and I have no more complaints/expectations. He has to a large degree moved on and is a bit annoyed at people who try to force him back into a certain box of subjects that he is no longer interested in. And bemused by newbies who probably have not accomplished nearly as much in their own life, yet they dig up an ancient post and try to rather rudely debate him about it. What disappoints me now is the less-than-stellar quality we are providing in a couple of the forums. I can't put my finger on it but so much seems blah. Well, if you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem so I'm off to create some "genius content.'
