Oh, you do NOT go to these places, for the towns! They are the most amazing places, but you need to know where to go. One place is the Mulu Caves (the world's largest cave system). It is fascinating. Rivers run through it, you can trek through it, you can go underwater cave-diving, and there is an area where you can watch ten million bats fly out every evening, literally darkening the sky. ![]() And if you are very lucky, you will get your chance to see the world's largest flower (the Rafflesia) in full bloom. ![]() You can also visit ..... the tribal headhunting villages! Yes they welcome tourists. Headhunting is banned now (it has been banned for 90 years) but they still have preserved human skulls from their past, more-savage days. And they can give you demonstrations of how they still hunt today, with blowpipes. (The tip of their dart is laced with poison; they blow the pipe; the dart flies out; hits a bird with great accuracy, from as far away as 20 metres). | It was fine, until I finished climbing a very steep hill in the caves, panting. I'd gone on all fours, and used my bare hands to help myself climb up. The guide then told me that the hill was actually a hill of bat dung, accumulated over centuries. I looked up and sure enough, yeah, ten million bats were roosting in the caverns above. |

| Kinda sounds like Grafton (NSW, Australia): Bats at south Grafton.JPG - ABC Contribute Photo - contribute to your ABC Quite a large population of fruit eating massive bats... great to look at as you drive through but kind of a problem for the locals (bat poo everywhere). |

![]() The orang utans in Singapore have impeccable table manners and will use spoon, fork, napkin etc. The matriarch, Ah Meng, has passed away from old age, but here's a picture of her, at her 40th birthday party: ![]() She leaves behind many children, grandchildren and great grandchildren at the Singapore Zoo. For friendly tigers, you would have to go to a certain famous Buddhist temple in Thailand. The monks here believe that kindness is reciprocated by kindness, and that's why they get on well with the tigers: ![]() Tourists are welcome too: ![]() I really enjoyed this temple. There's another place in Thailand, and also in Singapore, where you can watch elephants do paintings. No kidding. They will paint landscapes, flowers, other elephants, abstract art etc, holding a paintbrush in the tip of their trunks. ![]() By an elephant named Thongpoon. ![]() Painting of an elephant, by an elephant. ![]() Abstract by Boonbim, one of the star artists. ![]() Another painting by Boonbim, who focused on roses for a long time and simply refused to do trees. And after saying so many nice things about Eastern countries, I guess I shall say something nice about a Western place. Here's a picture from my favouritest place in New York! ![]() It has a fascinating collection of dinosaur fossils and other natural history stuff. The museum is worth many hours of wandering around. |

With hindsight, everyone thinks they could spot a great idea, but in reality, what makes the idea great is the fact that no one can spot it except for that person who sees it so clearly he has the confidence to make it happen. This pattern has played out again and again with every invention and every innovation - no one besides the innovator understand the innovation until it is finished.

Bali is also great. I think you will have to find out the benefits yourself, there are opportunities for learning. I would suggest going to a country where it is relatively safe. If you need some travel advice for Thailand just let me know. Last edited by Ikkyo; 10-22-2010 at 07:19 PM.
