If I go the auction route, I'd prefer to do it similar to eBay style. So far the variations that have been mentioned don't appeal to me.

This was really just an experiment, so I'll probably experiment in some other directions.

It might be fun to do an auction where the bidding is done with any value except for money.

It would be interesting to see what kind of value people would offer up, and what would consist of the "high bid" in Steve's view.

Great idea!
I could offer to make him a professional DVD (film and edit) give a filmmaking class so he could learn to do it himself

Wink

My first post here, and wanted to say this.

I was very touched by the post about the inspiration experiment. I think it was one of Steve's best posts ever.

Steve's Myer's Briggs Type probably ends with a "J",(google Myers Briggs for more info). People with such profiles tend to have their lives organized and planned out.

Therefore acting upon inspiration would be the opposite of what Steve is genetically disposed to,which would make this experiment very interesting.

As for the eBay incident, well it's too early to be able to know what the benefit of that was. Steve, I know you said "There were no big gains, but at least it wasn't much of a loss" or something to that extent. Still, I don't believe that is all.

Trust that this incident will lead to other ideas and a door WILL open. "When one door closes, another one opens". It's true, but it doesn't say it's going to open right away. It might be crackig open as we speak, very slowly, but surely

Last but not least, English is not my first language, so excuse whatever sounds wierd

I hope everyone has an amazing day.

There is a fantastic opportunity here for you. A website where personal development folks and others can have folks bid on their "time"...run with this! Nothing like this on the web!

Hi Steve, the moment I saw the ebay auction a few days ago, another consultation idea popped into my head for you.

I did not post it though, because the ebay experiment was going strong so it seemed sort of pointless & unsolicited.

Now that the ebay thing has been cut short though ... are you open to hearing different ideas? (I generally like to check before giving people suggestions).

Just for fun, I tried selling my soul on e-bay and it's still on the listing. Just two days to go to end the auction.

I intuited it was *really* only pulled because of the magical words "Steve Pavlina". As in, "You let Steve Pavlina do it but not me!" *shakes head*

There are sites for people who do consultations for a living, but I'm not familiar with any that do consultations at auction. It's an interesting concept; I'm sure people will capitalize on it.

I had a feeling eBay might pull the plug on this one.

Ah, well, there are alternatives if you wanted to pursue them, of course. Either way it was interesting to see the bid was already at $1,000.

I found other auctions for consultations/sessions -- my guess is that someone who feels adversarial towards Steve sabotaged this. There are people out there who feel quite gremliny about Steve -- he does inspire some kittywompus!

I get the feeling that as soon as someone starts profiting from this concept, eBay will reconsider their policy.

Default Paypal Expen$ive!

As far as merchant solutions go, PayPal is one of the most expensive.
I used to work for a company selling credit card processing and machines to go with the processing. If we would have found someone paying near 5% to get their merchant processing done, a few heart attacks may have ensued.

I DID find a guy paying 5.5% once, but that was because he didn't have a machine, didn't want a machine, and preferred calling in credit card numbers over the phone to a company every time.

The highest I've seen for actual discount rate processing was 2.78% and I swear, the guy nearly died when I showed him what the "normal" percentages are!

I wish now Paypal would lower transaction fees because of their stricter stance but we are still paying near 5% in Paypal transfer fees.

Yeah, ebay is a scumbag company. They do a lot of shady things. I've been there. I haven't sold anything over a 1000 bucks, so that sucks for you. But I've been banned, and their rating system sucks too. I sold dvds on their for a period, a guy placed a bid, and gave me a negative rating right after he got it. "Not the dvd I wanted." Well.. you f-cking bid on it. I asked ebay if they could change it, and they said to contact the guy, other than that, they wouldn't do anything about it besides saying there are ways you can avoid shady buyers. They're really really bastards. And I don't know if it's still like this, but if your feed back is under like 4.2 stars out of 5, you aren't allowed to sell anymore.. it's a bogus site. More of a rant, but I feel ya, and crap like that with them is expected. Customer service doesn't do jack either, all they say "oh we understand your concern.. but.. WE DON'T GIVE TWO SHTS, WE DO WHAT WE WANT." Oh, and they don't have a phone, just that live chat thing and trust and safety email. I don't know how they became such a power house, but they'll fall.

There's a difference between recognizing a potential pattern and acting as if that pattern is taking place right now. What if you didn't recognize the pattern correctly? The issue with "Hope for the best but prepare for the worst" is that people learn to ignore hoping.

I spoke with the owner of a company that has a Live Internet Bidding platform today about this idea.

My idea would be to create a simple plugin/widget for Wordpress that would allow people to enable live interactive bidding for their servives on their sites.

For example, it would allow Steve to hold an auction this coming Friday at 7pm for five 1-hour sessions of his time. Everyone would come to the site, click a button that loads up a bidding interface and bidding starts at $1 or whatever Steve wants.

Steve would have the back-end administrative interface to administer the bidding and it would happen live at 7pm with people bidding head-to-head like at a real auction. The system also allows for people to leave absentee bids prior to the auction which will bid them up to a maximum.

What that means is that if I wanted to I would put in a maximum bid of $500 for example, and the system would bid up to $500 on my behalf but it would only bid as much as is needed to win the bid.

So if the highest bid was $300, and the bid increment was $10, then the system would automatically bid $310 on my behalf, and if there was nobody willing to bid $320, then I would win it for $310.

There are a whole crapload of cool features in the bidding platform. It was created for the real auction industry and costs millions to put together.

The idea would be to allow such a platform to be used for consultants to sell their time at auction.

Anyone who is interested in this, PM me or email me. I am in talks with the owner of this technology to see if they want to develop something just for us consultants.

This would be an awesome way to sell coaching / mentoring / consulting service, or even reiki healings, psychic readings, autographed books, or anything else really. It can also be used very effectively for charity auctions.

Anyway, any interest in this please let me know. The more people interested the more these guys will look at it as a viable platform to build.

I know I'd use it.

The really cool thing is that it would have ZERO of the politics involved with dealing with eBay.
