Default Idea for improving this forum 1000%

This place is in desperate need of a wider palate of emoticons.

Really.

This must be the only place on the net with just eight measly smilies.

Just save the above and ftp them to your vBulletin's /images/smiles/ folder. Then in the admin panel look for the Add Smilies feature for the installation.

Can you post a link to the source of these images? Before I install new smilies, I need to make sure the copyright holder has made them available for free use with VBulletin... or that they've been released to the public domain.

If you add more smilies, it would be nice if you added a profile option to not display them (animated ones in particular). There doesn't appear to be one right now.

I have been collecting these since 2000. I used to hang out on a popular dotcom board back then where some members would create smilies and contribute them to the board for free. This board spunoff about twenty others over the past seven years. Each of the spinoffs used the same emoticons and had members create even more. I have saved all of them, use them on my boards, and passed along the family-safe ones to you. These are not from any of those packs of emoticons which sell on the Net. As is obvious from the different designs, they were made by many different people.

Worst case scenario, you get a cease and desist order.

If we stick with just lame static ones then we are limited to what we already have here. All the best ones are animated.

It's pretty safe to assume that these are all public domain. If you do a search on free smilies you will find most of them offered for free.

Worry not fellow members, the moderation team has already lobbied on your behalf for more emoticons and I can say that it's probably something you can expect in the future.

You’ll have to leave it to Steve/Erin for any official feedback on this matter, and I'm not sure exactly when you’ll see more emoticons (I have an idea, but for now I'm going to say "you'll have to wait and see"), but if you’d like to increase your chances of getting some new ones, my advice to you would be to come up with a reasonable set (ie. nothing too elaborate) of non-copyrighted (ie. free) emoticons that contribute to the existing emoticons or serve as suitable replacements and let Steve know where he can find them (ie. by providing a link or something).

I’d also make sure that any recommendations include sets of both animated and non-animated emoticons, since, while I'm sure Steve will consider animated emoticons if they are beneficial to the forum, I can’t guarantee Steve will use animated emoticons (although he might -- don't quote me on that).

Edit: Nevermind what I said about animated emoticons. For more info see Steve's post below. (For the record, I happen to agree with Steve. Animated emoticons have their advantages, but I think a forum -- or at least this particular forum -- is more suited to static, non-animated emoticons.)

Well, I have done my bit by offering some of the smilies we use on our boards, so I will bow out of this project. Hopefully, you guys can manifest some good ones for this forum.

I like smilies because good ones (like my examples) always trigger a smile on my face.

Antiventurecapital I must say that your emoticons are simply amazing! Very creative. Seems like there's one for every emotion and occasion.

I think the animated ones would be too distracting. Plus they make the forum look a bit immature for my tastes. I'd be happy to install more smilies that aren't animated though.
