Steve, have you ever been overseas before?

I went overseas for the first and only time a few summers ago, to Singapore for 5 weeks and then to Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia for 1 week, a few days at each place.

Basically... It was almost mind blowing, and life-altering in my perception of the world, so I totally agree that it would be beneficial for your kids to see other countries as they are growing up. And of course I think you would get some great content ideas out of it (you haven't seen the world until you've seen a Thai Ping Pong Show - yes, I attended one of those. I think the girls in our group enjoyed it the most ).

And I just realized that other countries probably have some great raw recipes of their own that are totally unique to their culture... I'm sure you would discover something tasty to tell us about as well.

Perhaps we could host meet-ups and do some workshops in various cities too.
If I was in your position....I would become a minimalist. I would sell all my stuff, own 50 some odd things and travel.

This is something I actually intend on doing once I meet a few personal goals that are coming with reach for me.

Travel related growth topic would be something i'd really get into. I would read that! Nothing like immersing yourself in an other culture to grow, change, think and rethink, and discover more about yourself/other human beings... I join the others who suggested that kind of writing.

Only place I've been outside the USA so far has been Bermuda (UK), which was hardly a foreign experience since I spent the whole week at a 5-star resort with 80 other people from the self-help field. I've also been to other islands like Hawaii and Puerto Rico but beyond that, nothing outside the continental USA.

Others have suggested that traveling more would be a major growth experience for me, and I agree.

I'm giving serious thought to devoting all of 2011 to global travel. I have some practical problems to solve to make that a reality, but I think it can be done.

I do seem to be headed in that direction. My entire business can be run from my MacBook these days. Eventually I may be able to run the whole thing from a cell phone.

I would suggest hiring a travel guide in at least some areas. Our group had a professional who lived in the region and led tourists around for a living. He took us to the best authentic restaurants, temples, big tourist spots, sex shows (), and a very entertaining broadway-style show in Thailand where every actor was a transvestite and actors played both male and female characters in the show (seriously).

We would have had no idea where to go and what to see without him having a plan laid out for us.

I love minimalism, Ironically it increases the feeling of abundance. I like what the user said with keeping it to 50 things that you own.. doing that now

The thing is, in Thailand people will tell you to "book a taxi for the day because it's less dangerous" or laugh at you "haha good luck to find accommodation in Rai Lei for ten dollars a night! that will never happen!". those are (fear-based) selling tactics, that's all. You can get a room for ten bucks a night no worries, and you can just rent a motorbike and buy a map with local good stuff to see. You won't get attacked or anything. truly, most people are Buddhist there, couldn't be cruisier than that.

To see authentic stuff you can also make friends with locals. We made friends with an absolutely lovely Thai lady and one evening she and her partner took us to a restaurant built and owned by her family...we rode on moppets with them about 15km outside of a major city and the restaurant was amazingly beautiful, the food tasty, and they even refused us to pay for the feast!!! Thai people are the most welcoming, friendly people you will meet. Just maybe try to show your interest in their culture (say hello the way they say it, in their language with your hands joined together, they appreciate that) and never let your feet face anyone, especially not Buddha. Okay I'll stop here so i don't hijack the thread. I love Thailand . Though i passed on the ping-pong shows, my husband had seen one when he traveled there alone so neither of us missed on something .

Interesting thread. The travel theme that cropped up half-way through the thread particularly caught my eye.

After my divorce I travelled, and it was the best thing I ever did. I was able to work remotely through an agreement with the company I worked for. I travelled through SE Asia, it brought me back from the brink, and taught me a lot about myself. I came back a changed (for the better) man, and my life has gone from strength to strength since.

I could quite happily have lived in Thailand, Malaysia, or the Philippines. I lead an "almost minimalist" lifestyle, so that wouldn't have been a problem.

However, I have two kids too (like Steve), and that proved to be a sticking point, curtailing trips to 3 months max. I would have liked to have travelled for longer, and have my kids come to live with me, but it was very tough to work out logistically with the ex not being too keen on the idea, and exams and schooling considerations coming up.

As the kids get older, it gets easier. I will be taking a trip to New York with my daughter soon. My son has already left home at 19 and lives with his g/f. The offer of a trip to the USA is there for him if he ever wants to take up the offer.

It's going to be interesting to see how you pull this one off Steve.

p.s. for those interested, I wrote about Thailand at Dream of Siam - Home

I suspect it may take a lot of trial and error.

Okay, I have to say this.

A farang like Steve Pavlina walking around in Bangkok is a magnet for cheats.

Not robbers, not violent people, but minor cheats, in the sense that they'll try to trick you into paying a lot more money for your taxi rides; your souvenir items; your meals etc etc, than Steve will actually have to.

I think white folks walking around in most places on the planet are a magnet for cheats.

It's all part of the experience. Anyone who travels enough will learn how to handle it in no time.

This is the way I look at it: I'm never going to pay more than I can afford to pay - so it can never be a problem.

I live in Singapore. And I've been to Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, China, Japan, the USA, the UK, Mauritius.

I've also been to Steve's hometown (Las Vegas). And actually I'll be in New York next week. It's a working trip - an intense one - but I have 1.5 days of free time at the end, good enough to check out 2 or 3 museums.

I hear NYC has some pretty cool museums ... I'd love to see the dinosaur fossils and all that.

Not robbers, not violent people, but minor cheats, in the sense that they'll try to trick you into paying a lot more money for your taxi rides; your souvenir items; your meals etc etc, than Steve will actually have to.
Oh okay. I guess i spent very little time in Bangkok, and when I did I was staying at the house of a famous politician so i think giving the last name to the taxi driver was enough to get him to behave don't wanna mess with this man. I guess we were lucky with that.

You're coming here? Gee, now I'm sorry I didn't get to know you better!

There has been a King Tut, or Egyptian exhibit at one of the museums here recently, and it may still be here.

If you need any advice or help finding your way around here, let me know .

@Steve about Montreal:

Good luck to you and Rachelle trying to understand Quebecois having only studied proper French at high school . Even French people don't understand French Canadians lol.

I wouldn't worry about having to speak French in Montreal. Montreal contains the majority of english-speakers in Quebec, and almost all the employees in commercial areas speak english pretty well... at least in my experience...

Go to the english side of town... it's hilarious. They hate french people so much that they don't use the end of street names (rd, st, blvd, etc) because if they did, it would have to be in french by law
