I received the same message as the one you posted fro many minutes yesterday evening. I believe it was around 15 or 20 minutes total before I could navigate further.

ssandra 04-01-2010 02:50 AM

Agree as well :)

Getting to be a bit annoying ;)

Weena 04-01-2010 03:25 AM

As above. Especially when you're in the middle of sending a message. I guess these forums are just too much appreciated by a huge number :D

That always seems to happen when I'm writing a message that could benefit from being re-thought, so I'm grateful for the little busy-server gremlin. :p

Like when you're in the middle of writing rude things? :p More seriously, I get what you mean, and it's a good way to look at it! :)

Andrew Brunelle 04-01-2010 03:35 AM

It's becoming an everyday thing. One day I had just typed a giant post responding to one of your blog entries and then lost the whole thing because it said the servers were too busy. They need to be updated or you'll probably lose some people.

ssandra 04-01-2010 04:14 AM

You don't need to loose the post.

If you use the Back button on your browser, the message is still there and you can just wait a while before putting post again.

Marc Robertson 04-01-2010 04:15 AM

There is a setting in the AdminCP that causes this to occur. I can't remember the name off the top of my head, but I'll look it up.

It always happens when I am flirting with some of the forum members. :p

Marc Robertson 04-01-2010 11:06 AM

admincp -> Options -> Server Settings and Optimization Options

Simultaneous Sessions Limit and *NIX Server Load Limit

These setting can cause the server too busy if they are set too low for the traffic levels.

I'm not too stressed about having to go outside for 15 minutes while I let someone else enjoy the forums too.

Savage 04-02-2010 03:13 PM

The next time this happens, please let me know the date/time it occurs. [Mod: No need to report time now, it's automated: http://www.stevepavlina.com/forums/554451-post32.html]]

Whenever I check the server loads, it's always running below 5% of capacity. I don't think it's a hardware issue or a traffic surge -- the hardware we have should be more than adequate even in cases of high traffic. It could be some runaway software program like a stats program that's hogging too many resources.

It looks like this problem started after our host did an OS upgrade on our server, so that's one reason to suspect it's a software issue. I also upgraded WordPress recently, so maybe the new version of WP is causing these surges. Do the server busy messages correspond with the times I post new blog entries, for instance?

spirit4711 04-02-2010 03:51 PM

I've had it happen many times during the last week. Many as in > 50 times. Usually after a few minutes it's OK again. It's a site problem, as other sites are loading quickly.

Savage 04-02-2010 03:54 PM

I've already contacted my web host to ask them to look into it, but server load spikes are notoriously difficult to diagnose unless we can catch it happening or discern a pattern. So at this point it would help if people could post the times (say in EST) when these spikes occur, so we can see if there's a pattern, like if they occur at regular intervals or at the same times of day. That should help the web host track down the issue.

spirit4711 04-02-2010 04:20 PM

Steve, isn't it possible to measure how many times the message 'server busy' is displayed from the server? It seems a forum software message.

Brutha 04-02-2010 06:49 PM

Maybe Marc Robertson is right and the problem is that the forum is wrongly configured and displays those messages even when there 5% load?

No, it's configured properly. The server load has to spike to 11.0 to show those messages. Normal loads are around 0.1, so that's a significant spike.

Moxie 04-02-2010 06:57 PM

It happened to me today, approximately around 1:35. And again as I was posting this - from 1:56. to 1:57pm Central time. :)

Edit: also 10:37pm

justhopingandsearching 04-03-2010 03:42 AM

It's been happening to me alot as well. It just happened a few minutes ago: ''All times are GMT. The time now is 03:32 AM.'' Sorry, I still haven't quite figured out how to do a screen capture.

If you are using windows vista and I presume windows seven there is a snipping tool which allows you to select a part of the active screen and select it, then save it as a jpeg file. The jpeg file can the be used to illustrate the message from the server.

If you are using a Mac or Linux I am sure their are ways to accomplish the same task. I am however unaware how help with those operating systems.:)
