Hmm, didn't realize this until you mentioned it.

In looking back over my posts, the older ones don't have the edit function, but the ones I've made today do.

Looks like there's a time limit on the edit function. My guess would be that that is to stop people from going back to their older posts and editing in spam and stuff.

Not only that, but it would not be right if you would be able to edit a post that several other people have already responded to. If that happened, someone who would come and read that thread would not understand anything. That happens sometimes when somebody makes an offensive post and the mods delete it. People look at the thread and they don't understand why everyone was so angry, because the offensive post is now gone (or edited by a moderator). If everyone could edit their own posts no matter how old, it would be a mess.

That depends on what you consider a "new thing" to be.
I think the limitation is at least 1-2 years old.

You should find a few public discussions of the reasons for that policy if you use the search function.

Yeah, it has been this way ever since I started posting here. You have a reasonable amount of time to edit a post.

Look at it this way - it makes for great incentive to always ask yourself if what you're writing might later make you uncomfortable, regretful or worse. It took me a good long while to build my internal "appropriateness monitor", but it was well worthwhile.

If you're only concerned about such things as weak/poor grammar, typos, or an idea that could be better expressed? Not that big a deal, in the greater scheme, you're just one user among many, making conversation on one forum among a multitude.

Maybe a better idea would be if you could only edit your post as long as nobody else has replied to it by using the quote function.

Not a bad idea but that's much harder to do right from a programmer's perspective, bluedragon. Also many people will reply to a post without quoting it, which bypasses the "quote check."
