Oops. Wow. Thanks! Is the self-effacing padding equally insubstantial as flattery? I should think if you have something good to say, don't keep quiet-- but, are busy people likely to tire of "I really admire your work in..." or "You rock!" etc.? |

I loved this post, very articulate! I would definitely never begin by apologizing... I kind of figured this one out by myself. If I were to write you an e-mail, Steve, i would include the "point" in the first 5 words, if possible. I would actually be more concerned that you wouldn't read past the fifth word, than that I could "bother you". I mean, someone writing a whole paragraph about why he doesn't want to bother you would be bothering you in itself, and if someone doesn't realize that, I think you're right in deleting that message. Although low self esteem people can also be great people, but not necessarily great contacts for you, especially if they actually want to do some business. |

My favorite part was about not putting people on pedestals. The next time I'm in the elevator with my CEO I'm going to chat with him like he's already my good friend, instead of my usually silly stammer about the weather.

Gosh. God damn it I just sent out a email recently contacting a freelance developer I wanted to hire and waffled on... no wonder they didn't contact me back and I thought I knew better than that! Great advice and will make me much more aware of what I write. |
