The first piece that comes out tends to fall apart a little, which happens with a lot of pies probably. But once you get going, you can serve this without it tearing apart. After it's been in the fridge for a day, especially so.

That looks mmm-mmm-good! And with no MSG, haha! Perhaps next time, you guys could blog about the raw food you normally eat (it is slipped in sometimes, but a full article would be nice), how much they cost, as well as how to tell the difference between raw and "raw", like you did with the almonds. Also, this may seem like a no-brainer, but would making a raw food pie from regular fruit bought at say Wal-Mart have the same nutritional value as organic fruit? That part really confuses me about raw foodism. Is organic the way to go or can I get away with eating a big ol' McIntosh? |

I am not a raw foodist but I had bookmarked this link ORGANIC PASTURES FRESH RAW DAIRY for truly raw and organic almonds from California. I haven't tried them yet, though. I am also not a vegan but I also hesitate to support dairy farms (even organic) too much (I eat butter and cream in coffee) and in this case have to go with Gov. Schwarzenegger who said "milk is for babies". Being European myself I mistrust organic products from Spain since their almonds are normally sprayed as much as California almonds and they don't say on their website where exactly (what farm) they get their almonds from. And conventional almonds are sprayed very heavily, like peach trees here in Maryland where I live now. I will try both almond suppliers now since for me neither one is really local. Your pie recipe by the way is making me more curious to look further into raw food than just fruit and salad. |

Those look really good! Unfortunately, I can't eat fruit right now without basically collapsing. I finally went to a nutritionist and she said there is something wrong with my liver, gallbladder, or pancreas. She's ordered several kinds of tests (blood, saliva, urine) for me to try to figure out what's wrong. I'm always a little sad now when you talk about your raw food diet, because it looks so yummy! Hopefully I'll find my way out of this and be able to eat fruit again. -Erica |

| Thanks James! I got the recipe from this website: Raw Apple Pie Recipe | The Art of Balanced Living I tweaked it a little, though. I added pumpkin seeds to the filling, and I used currants instead of raisins your typical raisin. And I used more cinnamon that the recipe called for, because I LOVE cinnamon. I also added a bit of ginger. I used organic gala apples - the are my favorite kind of apple! |

I'm not raw but if I ever do make desserts I always make raw desserts. I've cut processed sugar completely out of my family's diet. Well not my 15 year-old's. teenagers will eat what they want when they're out of the house. Raw desserts are surprisingly simple to make. I just love Ani Phyo's recipe book. She has some great raw desserts in there.

1) I was taught not to mix nuts with fresh fruits....food combintaion101..any comments. In fact i try to eat just 1 fruit at one time and not combine with anything. 2) If someone is on Candida cleanse, s(he) is required to abstain from anything sweet including fruits. How do you deal with that in raw food diet? |

| Awesome! Well thanks for posting it! I need to get off my butt and create a website/blog already... I've been wanting to do so for a while now. I think I finally will this summer... Quote:
2) From my understanding of Candida, it's caused due to an imbalance of yeast in the body; and the yeast feeds and exists on sugar. BUT candida thrives when your body is in a more acidic PH state, whereas a raw diet will put you on the alkalized side of things! So a raw diet could potentially fix things up for you too. You should experiment! I think it'd be very hard to. Do you have a blender? That might also work. Otherwise, the only thing I could imagine doing is a) beating the heck out of your almonds or other nuts with a rolling pin or other hard object... b) buying date-puree, if it exists.

This looks delicious, Steve. I might have to use my blender, though as I do not have a food processor yet and want to try this recipe out as soon as I can. I am really curious about your recipe for garlic "bread" ( you mentioned it early in your post) if you'd like to share it. I assume the bread was in quotations because it isn't actually bread. I'd like to learn more about these tasty alternatives.

I have tons of raw food "un"cook books and my favorites are the raw desserts. However, then you get the people who tell you NEVER to mix fruit and nuts, and then it gets a bit much for me. Without being able to create delicious, gorgeous creations like these pies, what's the fun of eating raw? |

I haven't made a cake since I was 12 (about 20 years ago) And yesterday, after reading this I found myself going to buy the ingredients. It came out delicious! I am discovering new sides of myself. thank you!! |

I made the pie with plums two days ago. It was so easy to prepare, the food processor was easy to clean because there nothing was oily, and the pie itself turned out great! Much easier and healthier than baked pies, and so tasty. Thank you Steve |

| It’s unfortunate that I have to get my nuts from 5500 miles away instead of 55 miles away, but I’d rather use the best ingredients available. Are most raw foodists more concerned with personal health rather than the environment? That's why I feel more comfortable with the vegan community than raw--the former is more concerned with the big picture IMO. They may eat junky (or not), but I don't understand the intense focus on health. Especially when pasteurized almonds are not exactly bad for you! They don't have acrylmides or rancid fats like roasted almonds. |

Just tried the recipe with strawberries, very tasty indeed! The nuts and dates killed our kitchen machine. We had enough time to buy a new blender from a local store, but I found no time to make a picture, and it had no time to sit in the fridge, too. Well, next one. Quote:

I must say that one thing I have noticed through my limited exposure to raw food diets is that the recipes always seem to imitate cooked foods. There appears to be a strong community around raw food lifestyles, so are their any original recipes specific to raw food (i.e. not imitating other foods)? I imagine that if there were, it would give the raw movement more credibility with the wider population. I mean if I get given a choice between a warm, fresh apple pie, and a raw apple pie, I'm probably going to go for the first one. But if I were to be offered a unique raw dish that is unlike anything else I have tried, I'm gonna give it a go, which in turn may lead to me seeking out more info on raw food, which may in turn have me contribute to this community in some way. The pie looks delicious by the way. |
