I'm planning on making a couple of these pies tonight, actually.

I'll let you know what I think. They look absolutely awesome.

Default yum!

Thanks for the recipe, Steve!
I always bake at least half a dozen cakes and such for my birthday party, and last weekend I added the raw food pie.
I still eat from all food groups, and I'd never tried to make raw food before. Even vegetarian is still kind of exotic to me All the same, I know how to read a recipe and decided to try it out.
I bought nuts, and dates (nice fresh ones) and some strawberries, I walked into my garden and picked loganberries and red and yellow raspberries and red currants which are just now huge and sweet and part of my daily diet until the birds get at them (it is a race!)
And then I made the pie. Amazing - a twenty minute pie recipe! miraculous. A new staple in my birthday diet. And I am thinking more often! It has got to be delicious with plums, too. I'll find out in August/September when they are ripe.

Default something special for the 4th??

I made the blueberry pie for my in-laws house cooling party this weekend (they're moving out). My mother-in-law repurposed the pie to celebrate someone's forgotten anniversary. Terrific! The special couple left early and the pie didn't come out until late, long after all the other desserts came out. Sigh. Then... a short while later, my husband took a picture just before the last slice disappeared.

I'm going to try the recipe again for a 4th of July party. My nephew loves fruit but is allergic to nuts, so I'm trying the "Fat-Free Crust" I found in The Joy of Vegan Baking. 2 cups Grape Nuts cereal + 1/2 cup thawed apple juice concentrate, baked 10 minutes.

I'm planning on using strawberries, apples, and blueberries. I figure using too many blueberries in the puree would obscure the apples & strawberries. I don't have time to experiment, so I'd appreciate any ideas.

I made a blueberry pie last night and I'm shocked at how good it is.

I almost feel like I'm eating something bad for me.

I mean if I get given a choice between a warm, fresh apple pie, and a raw apple pie, I'm probably going to go for the first one. But if I were to be offered a unique raw dish that is unlike anything else I have tried, I'm gonna give it a go, which in turn may lead to me seeking out more info on raw food, which may in turn have me contribute to this community in some way.

The pie looks delicious by the way.
Good points.

The point of imitating cooked foods is a draw. It's saying "Hey, I can choose to be healthy and still not give up the foods that I love."

I don't think the idea is to surpass cooked foods. I mean, you're right, a nice warm apple pie out of the over is delicious. But it's also terrible for you. For a person who loves apple pie, a raw apple pie is a nice alternative. No, it may not taste quite the same, but it's still delicious and it's nourishing at the same time.

Thanks for the recipe!

We made a raw watermelon/banana/pear pie yesterday. I found it delicious, but too fatty and especially way too sweet. I wasn't able to finish my slice, I would have vomited!

Isn't there something I could mix with the nuts to make it less fat? And something less sweet than dates to make the pie hold together?

Maybe I'll try with grinded carrots next time.

Out of curiosity, Rose, are you aware of the pattern you're running here yet? Or are you still doing this subconsciously?

If you don't know what I'm talking about, feel free to PM.

This is a general comment not directed at anyone.

One thing I don't like about the raw movement is the imitation of all the cooked dishes like burgers and the various gourmet ones.

Why bother? These foods are equally if not harder for the body to digest than their cooked counterparts. And they almost never taste the same. They just look the same.

Natalia Rose, author of the Raw food detox diet says it isn't about eating 100% raw but keeping it light in the body to have clean cellular health. Good food combinations and light food is the key and I agree with her.
