Steve- I was just wondering if you've ever considered selling an article to a magazine...? I had this thought the other day, as I was reading some girly magazine... (I think it was either Self or Elle). I was flipping through the pages, and I was thinking, "How great would it be if there was a Steve Pavlina article right here? It would make this entire magazine worth buying." ...Because I love reading your articles, but I don't usually have my laptop with me throughout the day, and I rarely have time to sift through the archives when I get home at night. (Books are good, too-- but sometimes magazines are fun to read, because there's such a random assortment of stuff in there. And when you find a really good article in the midst of a bunch of fluff, you feel like you hit the jackpot. Your articles could apply to so many different magazines, too. They could fall into so many different categories... health, fitness, psychology, finances, relationships, spirituality, etc. They could fit into anything from Natural Health to mens' magazines. And you would be reaching an audience that you don't normally reach. Because almost every person out there is interested in improving his or her life in some way-- but a lot of those people don't actively research "personal development" online. Every magazine has a few articles that could technically be considered "self-help," even if they're just categorized under the Psychology section. Sooo... I don't know. I just think that it would be amazing if one of your incredibly well-written articles was featured in some magazine that you could pick up in the grocery store and read while you're in the waiting room at the dentist's office. I have a feeling that you might say that you're not interested... but I just wanted to throw out the idea in case it's something that you haven't thought of. The problem with magazines is that the usually go out of print very fast. Steve's blog posts get probably also read years down the road and he also intends that his book will stay in print for a long time. Quote:
The ability to write for a magazine which a circulation while getting a deal that allows him to publish the same article online would be something that needs personal connections. It isn't something where you just have the idea to do it and afterwards are able to do it but you need to know the right people

I have articles reprinted in magazines now and then. I don't charge for the reprints. Sometimes these are magazines outside the USA. Most magazines are pretty fluffy and shallow though, especially the ones that have anything to do with self-help. So this isn't something I intentionally seek out. I just deal with the requests as they come in.

Ideas like this have no value. Opportunities are the things that are valuable. It one thing to use the opportunity of someone writing you to get one of your articles to be reprinted and it's another thing to pay the opportunity cost of going out to look for someone to publish ones articles. I think that it might be a mistake to pay those opportunity costs. If you criticise a strategy that someone follows by suggesting that the person does something different it's worth discussing whether that suggestion is good or bad. Thinking in terms of strategy (and opportunity costs) means that I react differently to ideas like this then most people and might seem protective to you.

Many of them may have been inspired by this site, and they may be successful, but their spirit isn't the same at all. | |
