| Btw... Steve.. this one may be a bit difficult and a bit out of line, but I am curious and probably you thought about this question before and maybe even discussed it with Erin: What if being with your family ultimately prevents you from growing further, what would you choose for, growth, your family or a compromise?

MasterD, I do Isshinryuu Karate. TOKOKIN: Traditional Okinawan Karate Of Kinnelon Picasa Web Albums - ToKoKin - April 2008 Shiai I'm on the left. The head instructor of the school is on my right. This was April 2008. The style I study has, I believe, a primary focus on those things traditionally associated to karate: striking, stance, kata (form), bunkai (technique analysis), conditioning. We supplement with forays into judo (gentle way; throwing and being thrown), chin-na (joint manipulation; very practical and hardcore), kumite (touch, not full contact, sparring), and probably a couple other things. It's very well rounded, which is awesome. I cannot guarantee every traditional karate school in the area is so versatile - many are not. But try them out anyway and see if they are to your liking. |

You might enjoy this series of videos of three complete kata. The 1st is the wife of the head instructor doing our first kata, Seisan (From the shurite province of Okinawa). The second is my dad, at the time a green belt, having practiced for about a year at that point, doing the same kata. The 3rd video is the head instructor doing hamehiga no tuifa (tonfa - nightstick). Keep in mind kata is the heart of karate. It is a codified collection and series of moves with many applications to real world situations. These demonstrations were for show. Picasa Web Albums - ToKoKin - Kinnelon Videos |
