Default (I cried) Find Your Purpose in Around 20 Minutes

I did the 20 minute exercise to discover my purpose, and nothing happened; no tears or emotion. I believe Steve's article says if your context is messed up this will not work. After reading that I read one of the articles on context, and this is where something big happened.

As soon as I hit the following paragraph, I started crying like a baby and tears gushed from my eyes (I cannot remember crying for real like this in even the past three years):

"This experience gave me a deeper appreciation of the power of context. I would not have even attempted such a thing as a Catholic. I would never have set the goals I did. I’m not sure anyone can truly understand how different reality seems from the perspective of different contexts if you’ve never switched contexts. If you subscribe to a disempowering context, you may be absolutely crippled in your ability to effectively tackle certain challenges no matter how hard you try (if you even try at all)."

I am still trying to figure out what my emotional response to this text means, and how it relates to my purpose.

Thoughts?

Sean

Why should it have to do with your purpose? (I mean, just because you cried...)

Because that's a clue that you've hit on your 'true north' -- if you cried then it means you've reached alignment with what you really want deep down inside.

Default The Tears of Truth

Hi actioncuresfear,

Obviously I don't know you or your situation. But from reading the paragraph that gave you the big emotional "hit," it seems to me that you responded to the idea of being stuck in a disempowering context. It sounds like something deep within you registered this as true for your situation. One possibility is that you are currently stuck in a limiting belief/culture system, and part of your purpose is to start to question that and break out of it. Another possibility is that you experienced these limitations in previous lifetimes, and you have recently become free, such that you are now empowered to truly blossom as an individual.

A good meditation for you might be to think about whether anything is holding you back, and what that is. Next step would be to envision clearly how your life is being affected by any limitations, and how things could be different if you changed your context of beliefs. Examine your life, think about the belief systems that you inherited from your family, your religious community, or your country of birth. Another thing to meditate on is what emotion you were feeling when you were crying. (I cry for many reasons, sometimes for bliss, love, recognition of truth, inspiration, frustration, or sheer mental agony.) Were you feeling pain? Simple recognition of truth, something "hitting home"? Relief? A sense of freedom or release? Sadness or frustration?

You wondered how this might relate to your purpose. Well, if you truly have encountered limitations and overcome them, or are in the process of overcoming them, then maybe your purpose has to do with helping others with similar problems?

For example, I have had trouble with depression from the age of 10-12, and have used myself as a "laboratory" to learn how different things affect my mood. I've learned about how nutrition, lifestyle, spirituality, environment, and genes all influence depression. Luckily, I've gotten to the point where depression doesn't have to rule my mind or my life. As a result, whenever I encounter people who tend towards depression, I have lots of great advice that I can give them, if they're open, of course.

It sounds to me like you really want to reach for some important goals, and maybe something's been holding you back. Maybe your heart (the source of deeply felt tears) is telling you that it's time to break free of all that limits you, and reach for the goals that are truly important to you.

Good luck!
~SD
