I just watched this extremely amazing and intriguing film called 'Waking Life'. It's unique and unlike anything I've ever seen before. I wanted to come on here and mention it because the film in its entirety discusses many themes, concepts, and ideas all related to consciousness. I think most of the readers of both Steve and Erin's website would really appreciate this film. ... Has anyone seen it? |

Yes, actually have this on my ipod. I think I heard about it on here somewhere, so if you search around I'm sure you'll find topics about it. The film really got me interested in existentialism and it sort of changed my perspective on things. I must say it was kind of trippy watching it at first, but it's a really awesome experience over all.

It's created with a technique called Rotoscoping I think. They actually filmed everything in real life and then animated on top of it. I think Washington Mutual or somebody has used it in a few commercials as well. Wikipedia actually has a nice page on the movie from what I remember. I really liked this film too. It's one of my favorites. I'm happy you brought it up! |

I watched this several years ago; I need to see it again. The filmmaker, Richard Linklater has made lots of other interesting films. "Slacker" is probably most analogous to "Waking Life", basically following people around Austin TX while they give their "philosophies" on life. It's not as deep, but it's got it's moments, while being very entertaining. He also used the rotoscoping animation technique again in "A Scanner Darkly"; they did some pretty interesting stuff with that one, though aside from that I found the film rather conventional for a Dick novel adaption. It was still entertaining though. He did a better novel adaption of "Fast Food Nation", turning it into a narrative film where the book you'd think would make a better documentary.
