A phishing scam will ask you for personal info. All the verification email asks you to do is click a link, and then you'll see a thank you page. There's nothing further after that. I mainly think of the newsletter as a good way to keep in touch with people who don't have time to visit the site very often and just want monthly updates rather than daily or weekly ones.

I had also thought this mail was spam of somesort due to the 1shoppingcart.com url. I would have expected something from you to use the stevepavlina.com since I know you are technically minded, therefore I thought the message was spam of somesort and didn't click the link. Although since reading this post I have clicked it to activate my newsletter subscription.

Hence the blog post to let people know what's up. I don't think the 1shoppingcart.com link will be a problem after the initial import, since the verification email will come immediately after people sign up.

Steve, you can always set up a .htaccess redirect so that, for example: http://stevepavlina.com/verify_newsletter/queryhere Redirects to http://1shoppingcart.com/queryhere That might totally alleviate people's worries.

I was wondering about those emails. I remember signing up for the list a long time ago and nothing came of it, and all of a sudden I got a couple of emails asking me to verify that I want to be on it because I or someone else "recently" signed my email address up. Now I know that it was legit.
