I'm a little confused. What if, as in my case, you want to be openly caring, friendly and assertive, particularly to people who have similar values, and you know it's what you really want, but you've always let fear stop you from really putting yourself out there? Would I be pretending to be something I'm not by feeling the fear and doing it anyway after such a long time, or are you suggesting that maybe there's more to the hesitation than just fear, and that I'm actually not sure of what I want?

You can be afraid and still take action. That's perfectly fine.

What I disagree with is being afraid and pretending you're not afraid. I think it's better to honor the internal feedback you're getting and work with it instead of trying to suppress it.
