Hi everyone, Ever since I started reading Steve's articles on subjective reality, I couldn't help but shake the feeling that the world is just a dream. I started believing that other people were just dream characters. I've consulted with some other people, and they've advised me to accept my beliefs and integrate them in to my life in a positive way. As much as I'd like to, I don't think that would be ideal in my situation. I don't think it's healthy to have such thoughts. It's clear that other people are conscious. I see that, but some how I just can't convince myself. More than anything, I just want to stop these deluded thoughts. I know I should seek psychiatric help, but I'm embarassed to admit my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a ton. |

There are many things in life we believe without proof, I don't think it's too unhealthy to have beliefs, I really think that things become unhealthy when they consume for of your life than they should or when you begin forcing these beliefs on others. Some people believe that every lifetime is a preparation for the next, there are many differing beliefs about what life represents. I think the judgement on what is healthy and what is not is greatly decided on what you do with your belief and how it impacts on your actions in this life. |

Don't be so negative about it. Society wants you to believe that the established way is the only way, any other view is simply nonsense. The fact is, the mark of genius lies in being able to hold two or more opposing thoughts - paradigms, if you will - without subscribing to them. Don't listen to the twits who tell you, you HAVE to believe in one thing, and one thing only. because they are just afraid that when it comes down to it, they may be wrong too.

It sounds like you are becoming obsessed about this issue. Don't be embarassed and seek help if it is consuming you. Don't stress yourself trying to find all the answers. The answers will come to you when you are ready. Change your focus and let this issue go for now.

Thanks everyone for your advice I guess what I would really like is for someone to assure me, with absolute certainty, that they are indeed conscious, and more than just a dream character. Maybe then I could move on with my life..... Last edited by SecretSeven; 02-10-2008 at 01:40 AM. |

The dream characters are you, YOUR consciousness. What's so hard about that? Your body and identity are another dream character. I look out into the world and I'm showing myself I have a very diverse consciousness that expresses itself in many forms. |
