With a lot of these so called motivational speakers, there's this tendency to act very dominating and even a little pretencious. If I met a guy like Tony Robins in real life, I don't think I'd be very inspired because, quite frankly, I can't relate to him. He'd just talk me into the ground or eat me up or something. In a sense, Steve Pavlina strikes me as more human. I mean, he strikes me as more of a computer geek than a superhero. It makes me feel like personal development is actually doable (no offence Steve). When I read the material on this site, I rarely just absorb it like I would with some of the more preachy writers. I can use all these great ideas and insights, and at the same time I can identify areas where I think he got it wrong. It makes PD more of an active process, and allows me to think about things critically instead of seeking clear-cut answers. To me that makes it 10 times more inspiring than listening to all that other emotional fluff and forgetting it the next day. Just wanted to get that out there. Not to be a ditto-er, but I totally agree. ( I love it when someone else can perfectly articulate a general feeling...) But ya, that's why I stick with it, and encourage everyone I know to come here. Which is unexpected, because you'd think the more self-actualized someone becomes, like, the less relateable they'd be. But maybe the nature of moving up the Maslovian hierarchy of human needs dictate that just the opposite happens. Last edited by Lenie; 02-08-2008 at 06:04 PM. Reason: change color to gray | |

A teacher I had said that it is only when you can teach something to others that you truly understand it yourself. I think Steve is doing a great job simply by exposing his own development. He doesn't just point out the results, he shows us background, process and analysis too. That's something schools don't teach you until university level and even then most students don't get it. (I can't speak for the whole world, but around here the young generally don't learn how to do proper research) |
