(1) The word "theory" has a different meaning in science to everyday english. To quote Wikipedia, "scientific theories are essentially the equivalent of what everyday speech refers to as facts". Scientists tried bloody hard to falsify evolution (do you really think people wanted to accept that they were descended from apes?), and so far noone's been able to. (2) Chance and randomness are only a part of natural selection - filtering and accumulating the results does most of the work. If I ask you to roll 30 on 5 dice it'll take you 7776 rolls (on average) to do so. OTOH, if I ask you to roll one dice until you get a "6", then to keep that 6 and move onto the next one, it'll take less than 50 rolls. (Of course, actual natural selection is more complex in that billions of 'dice' are being rolled in parallel and there are many valid results). (3) There's no reason for laptops to evolve, but as you just pointed out constructs that are just as complex do "just pop up every now and then out in nature". P.S. This reply doesn't really belong in this thread any more than the original comment does. A mod should please feel free to move it.

| Hey, question on the raw food diet and sleep. If we are looking to our closest evolutionary relatives (the gorilla) why does the gorilla sleep like 12 hours a day if it only eats fruit? Just curious, not trying to insult anyone or start a debate. It just seems like it would need far less than that. Erock

| I have to say, I'm so glad that I found this, or rather was told about this, blog and forum. I have been a vegan for a while and have recently been diagnosed with Celiacs disease and I have always wanted to do the raw foods diet. I tried the diet before I was diagnosed with Celiacs and I feel that I failed because I'm only a high-schooler and I go to boarding school, where you eat what they have and what you can afford on the side. Your blog is giving me a lot of hope Steve, that I can still be super healthy with all three of my wanted and needed food restrictions. I have been slowly weening myself in, as it is still hard to achieve in boarding school or working at a camp in the summer. But mostly fruit and veggies, and it seems to be doing great for you, wouldn't be so challenging. And as a person who was always interested in health, most of my cravings are for things like fruit and nuts, I think brown rice will be the toughy, so I feel like I can achieve this is almost any setting. |

| Past couple of days I've started to feel my first real resistance to the diet. No particular cravings for other foods, but simply the shear volume of food I'm eating has become tedious at times. Gum sensitivity has gone away. Still don't know if it was at all related to the diet or not. Day seven I went on an extended bike ride and ended up feeling tired for most of the rest of the day... perhaps I wasn't getting enough calories. Tried to take a nap but didn't get to sleep. Day eight energy level returned but had a bit of a headache for most of the day. Day nine was a productive day, got up early, got a lot of work done, didn't feel the need for any naps.
