Default Arguments for designing your career from the top-down

Trent posted this article yesterday at The Simple Dollar blog. He argues that the distance between our work and the results (you work, which doesn't result in stuff you want, doesn't result in cash to get the stuff you want, doesn't result in a paycheck to get cash to get the stuff you want, but results in an electronic deposit to an account where you swipe a piece of plastic to get stuff you want) allows us to pretend that our jobs AREN'T making us miserable, and that getting more stuff will solve the problem.

It's very well written, and I recommend it to anyone thinking about redesigning their career.
