Dexterity

Hi Steve,

It was through the Dexterity Software website that I found your site, many many months ago and I am sure there are many here that found StevePavlina.com the same way.

I'm just wondering out of curiosity, are you likely to make your games free to download, for those of us who are interested in seeing your creations before StevePavlina.com came along?

Regards,
From Shannan

Hi Steve and Erin!

Interesting, how many people will play "guess the URL" when you said that the forums are installed and configured :)

What can I say. :)

I'm sorry if I/we are too intrusive by registering before the official launch. I guess people have tried various iterations of /forums, /forum, /vBulettin etc. from the moment forums were first discussed (although some might even have tried before that).

To be honest, I'm actually surprised not more people have registered so far - I'd have expected the URI to appear on Digg or Reddit by now..

@Steve: Maybe putting a .htaccess or similar to prevent search engines from indexing (and people from registering before the official launch) might be a good idea.

Again, mea culpa.

Seeing that Dexterity Software has been closed, is there some way people can still get a copy of (e. g.) Dweep Gold?

Sneaky people

I expected a few people would guess the URL. Actually I was counting on it. It's easier to test some features with a few members. If I didn't want people registering, I could have clicked a button to turn the forums off for all non-administrators. Just be aware that this place is still under construction for the next couple days.

As for Dexterity I don't plan to do anything more with the games or the old articles. I'd rather make a clean break than leave loose ends lingering about, especialy if it means people continue emailing me with game-related questions.

Anything specific that needs testing?

How about a logo in the upper left corner instead of the vBulletin image?

Although I can understand you, I always feel sad when a web site I liked simply gets deleted.

I'd really like you to put the old games online somewhere for free, without support and all. I would have liked to buy more of them over the time, but now I'll never get to see anything else but Dweep Gold. :(

That would be robots.txt, and while it is simple to set up, it really isn't that important. The forums will be made public at the end of the week, and the spiders wouldn't find this page unless someone posted about it on their site. With Friday being only two days away, there aren't very many people who would find the forum between now and then, even using search engines, and those who do will be helping us to debug and will be getting the site ready for launch day. ;)

Not all search engines respect robots.txt and humans certainly aren't bound by it. As for the actual practicality or necessity I agree.
