I heard a preacher say that it's a duty for a Christian couple to have children. That opting out of parenthood is selfish and not what God wants.

So if you're a Christian do you agree? I can see the logic in this for several reasons. To perpetuate Christianity and increase numbers. To fulfill your purpose as an adult and one of the purposes of marriage.

But if you feel truly unsuited for parenthood, would God want you to try to raise children anyway?

Hi Lioness, I wouldn't worry what exactly the Christians or the Muslims or whatever other authority wants, but as a father I would say that raising children is a spiritual mission to raise yourself. I often wonder who exactly teaches whom. But if you find your mission in other things, that is ok too. This your spiritual path and only you know what exactly your mission is.

All the best, I hope my response is of help,

Zeitgeist

LOL! Honestly that sounds like an ignorant preacher who just takes a verse in the Bible out of context and decides that it is a strict rule to be followed by everyone for all eternity.

Sadly, there are a lot of religious people like that...

I don't associate with any religion now, but I was raised Christian, and no, I would not agree with that.

If you decided to stop believing in Christianity, would it no longer be your duty?

Be clear about who is telling you it's your duty because in this case it is not God. Or is it?
