Now, I know it is a very broad term, so let me tell you what I believe. I'm indifferent to emotion (hence "stoic"). I believe that when you let go of pathos (passion/emotion/attachment) you allow apatheia (apathy, serenity, peace). God is the universe, the peace flowing through all things, but not all things are peaceful because sometimes people fall into pathos and forget their peaceful nature, so they have on and off moments of apatheia instead of a life full of it. Now, ask me anything you wish. You can even ask me how I would approach a problem if you have any. |

πάθος (pathos): passion or emotion ἀπάθεια (apatheia): serenity, peace of mind, such as that achieved by the Stoic sage. The purpose is to let go of the pathos in order to achieve apatheia. My interpretation, the way I practice Stoicism is that peace is not an emotion but a stillness and a calmness. Emotions whether Happiness, Anger, Sadness, Worry, Fear, are all the temptations.

As you put it you reciprocally contradict emotions and peace. So you categorically leave out the possibility of having emotions and being nevertheless in inner peace with it. Do yo see mastery over emotions from the deeper dimension within as an equivalent alternative for your way of just putting emotions away as a hindrance to peace? Is love for you an emotion? |

| Love, by its very definition, is an emotion: A strong positive emotion of regard and affection. If "mastery over emotions" means, detaching from emotions both good and bad to stay in a sense of stillness, serenity, peace, then yes. |

Ok, then love is for you a tabu, that one is clarified. How do you imagine having sex, you want to have sex or a partner at all? What I was referring to was if you can imagine that peace and emotions don't have to contradict each other. Thanks for making it clear. |

It is more like living on intentions/inspiration, then living on "desires" feeling of wanting to do things. Things just happen naturally without the emotional attachment. If sex is offered and I want it, why not, but don't get too excited remain in peace. If I want it but it is not offered, oh well, no use getting all emotional remain in peace.

I'm not sure what you're practicing is stoicism exactly. If by "detaching" you mean some form of repression or trying to change emotions, it might even have the potential for negative side effects. However, I can't tell if you're living a Bhagavad-Gita like non-attachment or a repressive detachment. Words about subtle interior qualities are never adequate are they? I'm into books and maybe you're not but here's two books specifically on stoicism I enjoyed. Amazon.com: A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy (9780195374612): William B. Irvine: Books Amazon.com: Letters from a Stoic (Penguin Classics) (9780140442106): Lucius Annaeus Seneca, Robin Campbell: Books |
