I am a completely novice meditater. I've thought about it and researched it for over a year now... maybe over two years, and played with it a little, but never actually done any meditating. But recently I've determined that my bottleneck in personal development is in the spiritual side, and so I've committed to a 30-day trial of meditating for 5 minutes every day. (Not much, but more than I can do consistently.) Anyway, I sat down in my meditation space today, set the timer, and began focusing on my breath. After a few dozen breaths I felt a kind of tugging in my mind -- kind of like that little signal that says it's time to sleep. But when I "followed" it, I didn't fall asleep. It just kept kind of going deeper and deeper. I was definitely still aware of my surroundings - the ice cream truck going by - but also kind of deeper into my mind. Is this normal? Is this of note? Or is this just my mind telling me funny stories because it's bored, so it's something I need to ignore and move past? I know I didn't describe it well, because I don't really have words for it - I'm kind of hoping you do. Thanks for your help. |

There is no RIGHT way to do meditation. Everyone is different. Some people swear you have to have a crystal with you, some think candles are needed, some tell you the lotus position is paramount. In my opinion, meditatio is just something you do to calm yourself down and experience yourself. And everyone is different. So, their meditation is different. [And this is my 500th post, yay!] |

So whatever it was, and whatever name you want to call it, it's certainly not a problem. And may be a good indication that I'm getting better at this meditation gig. Thanks for your feedback, everyone! It helps a lot to know that I'm on the right track. |

Put yourself in a position that will keep you awake and don’t worry about it. The ego is the part of us that uses words to describe reality. When you move into another part of yourself that does not use words, it can feel like falling asleep. The ego is not the part you are strengthening during meditation, so if it checks out, don’t worry about it. Your higher self in doing it’s thing and who really cares what the dumb, endlessly negative little ego thinks about anything. |
