If I decided to kill someone, would my victim have attracted his fate because of his own karma? If you came along and stopped me, would you thereby incur negative karma for preventing the victim from working out his karma?

Interesting question.... but what about the idea that some victims are just as responsible as the perpetrator because of their actions. Say I am a bully... and then I get shot by one of my victims. Would that not be just desserts for me? Or let's say I am a bystander.... that sees the torment, yet I do nothing to stop it. And the victim goes on a murderous rampage, and murders me too. Am I not deserving of such a fate... because I witnessed the cruelty done ... yet stayed silent?

I'm serious.... no I do not condone murder or any such thing like that. You, my dear Ray, know me well enough to understand that point. I am just commenting on the thread starter's post. And being the target of a bully in grade school, it was not just the bully that was the problem, but the people who saw yet did nothing. There is a quote that goes something like this..... It is not the words of our enemies that we remember, but the silence of our friends. Sometimes that alone does more harm than the cruelty. |

I doubt you would incur negative karma from preventing harm to another person, if anything, that is an act of kindness and you would get good karma. If you did prevent something bad from happening, perhaps that is how it was meant to be. If it was possible to incur bad karma in this way, that would be horrible. You would have no idea what actions to avoid because you could be aiding or interfering with karma with every action you took. |

That's a question I've thought a lot about. I grew up with the belief that we choose everything in our lives. Sometimes it is difficult to reconcile that belief with what seems like random acts of violence towards seemingly innocent victims. Such as victims of a serial killer or things like Columbine or more recently VA Tech. I think that perhaps there is more to it. Maybe the victims were perpetrators in past lives and the balance didn't occur until this one, with what seems like an undeserved act of violence against them. I believe that we get back what we give out and it seems that some people do seemingly "get away" with heinous acts. Maybe they don't actually get away with it and get retribution by being a victim of someone else in this life or perhaps the next... Of course this is purely speculation on my part...
