I'm changing my name.

To Meghan Rose van Klaveren. (I won't say my old one but I will say that it is incredibly dull and personally meaningless.)

My first name will not change. (It's Meghan.)

Why am I doing this? I'll need a couple hundred bucks and a court date and I'll need to get a new social security card and passport and notify people..

Yeah, yeah.

Well, I'm changing my name for many reasons. But the number one reason is that this name just fits. It's beautiful. It feels right. I've never called myself this before a few days ago, but when I did, I knew it was the name everyone should call me. My biological father's original last name, which is very common and totally dull, has been legally mine my entire life. When my mother married my stepdad, my sister and I took his last name (never legally; recently we reverted to our birth last names), which is Dutch and, well, it's all right. (Also, my biological father changed his last name to something random when I was 11 or so.) But I don't think that my stepdad is as important in my life as my mom is, so about 4 years ago I vaguely decided to take her maiden name.

Apparently, according to my mother, before I was born she thought Rose would be a great middle name, but then changed it to my father's mother's name (who I never met because she died before I was born). Well, I remember that when I was 7, I was sitting in school and thought of a rose and felt it would be a much better middle name than my current one. My mother had never told me of her prebirth contemplations until I told her this a few days ago.

So, yeah. Putting it all together, and confirmed by everyone who knows me, it fits and it feels right. Not to mention it has a beautiful ring to it. So, I'm thinking around October-December, I'll change it. :d

As I told my friend.. it feels like this was always my name. I just had to find it.

Also, wasn't sure of the right section for this.. but it is a very spiritual decision, so I thought this forum would be fitting. Feel free to move it to fun and recreation (?) although that seems like an odd place for this thread.

I've thought of changing my name on and off, but eventually lost interest and just stuck with my name. I have a name I would use when I eventually start writing, which is a combination of my middle name and my Dad's name.

If it feels good to you, then do it. Good luck mate and happy new you :)

If I were to change my name, it would have to be something that really spoke to me, sounded good, and meant something. I'm glad you've found that for yourself. I don't think my name sounds that bad, but a cool name can get you places, or at least get your foot in the door. I thought about having a stage name, but it's just a lot of effort and time to get the right name, so I've stuck with my "maiden" name, the one I was born with.

Incidentally, your name has a nice flow to it. I've always thought so. :D

When a friend of mine was expecting, I was stopped in traffic right by a beautiful rose garden. I thought, "rose" and felt a huge rush of energy, and my friend came to my mind. She hadn't found out the sex of her baby, but I thought, 'I bet it's a girl'. I found out later, she was giving birth right then, and had named her daughter Sarah Rose! She knew she would name her Sarah if the baby was a girl, but didn't think of Rose until she met her, after she was born.

I love that you're claiming your name!

Megan Rose of Klaveren

the von is German for "of" and denotes nobility or a connection to something meaningful . For instance if I were named Jennifer Von Baltimore I would be Jen of Baltimore

Although this is not a set in stone rule it is the common historical notation.

Klaveren in Dutch (very close to German in some dialects) means "Clubs"
Klaver means Club and the "en" makes it plural.

So you would be translated to Megan Rose of Clubs....
Actually I like it a lot, it has a very nice powerful and enigmatic ring to it.

What do you think? Instead of queen of Clubs you are the Rose of Clubs, the secret card found only in a deck of 53.

Haha thanks! Yes, it's a Dutch name. Not "von" but "van". And yes van means of in Dutch. I think klaveren actually means clovers, as my mother has told me (she was born in Holland). But clubs, clovers, same thing.
