Default Anyone Practice Transcendental Meditation?

I am thinking about learning Transcendental Meditation and am interested in hearing from people who have consistenly practiced it for at least a year or more. Has it helped you in your life? If so, how?

The whole TM thing is appealing to me but also seems a little cultish. However, I know I need to make some changes in my life and thought about taking TM in the past but never did it. At this point, I'm thinking I don't have much to lose.

Although I don't mind hearing negative criticisms of TM, I only want to hear from people who actually practice/have practiced it.

Thanks in advance for your input

Default

TM was my first and primary meditation practice for about 12 years. I then met an enlightened master who initiated me into a deeper level of meditation.Let me just say that it was the single pivotal point in the course of my life. My process of awakening would never have happened if it weren't for TM, and I suspect this holds true for almost an entire generation of seekers who learned it before me in the 1970s.

Without hesitation, for a beginning meditator, it's a practice I would recommend without reservation. It's effortless, and very rapidly stills the mind and takes it to Source. If you can just leave alone the rest of the stuff and just do the meditation without feeling the need to get into the rest of what the TM org sells, you'll be fine. If you have any questions feel free to ask; while I never joined the movement, I followed it quite closely and am aware of the drawbacks of spiritual organizations.

Incidentally the type of meditation Deepak Chopra sells is derived from TM. He was the poster child for TM in the early years when he was inside the org
