| Gah! I do it out of habit. (I almost said "it's habit" there, but I stopped myself ! You tricked me with your question. One thing I've noticed already is that I have to use a wider variety of descriptive words. Instead of just stating what something "is", or "isn't", I have to describe what I think about it more precisely. I like it. It seems like some adjective constructs express the same "isness" property. I don't know what to do with that, yet. |

Well, I think watching out for those modal operators of necessity helps even more than the forms of be. You know, like the linguistic norm has phrases like "I have to do x" or "You need to do y" or "I just gotta do this first" just pervading our speech -- so that we program our brains without even knowing we're doing it. It may seem to a normy that only nit-pickers pay attention to those, but it seems to me that those little thoughtless forms of speech add up to big influence on how we live our lives. Imagine how much more choice and opportunity would present itself in your life if you constantly deliberately used language of choice rather than of obligation. (I have totally exhausted myself just writing these two paragraphs without using any forms of be. I need a nap! I mean, I choose a nap! |

But, the thing is, people need to do certain things, because they're the right thing to do .. jk | |

You have described a reason to choose to do a certain thing ("because they're the right thing to do") (pardon me for using the BE in there ("they're") in quoting you) -- a reason for DOING the certain thing, but not a reason for NEEDING to do a certain thing.
