I love awareness, I love "aha" moments, I love it all. What are some of the ways you have gained an increase awareness or what are some of the things you do intentionally to increase awareness?

I use dream analysis, journaling, introspection, and various drugs to help explore and understand why I do the things I do. I also suggest meditation and therapy but I can't attest to their value. (I'm new and impatient with meditation, and too poor for therapy right now Most people are repeating their childhood traumas until the grave. Take the time to look at the behaviors you have, the feelings you have, the beliefs you have, and figure out where they come from and what purpose they serve. Then reconfigure them to suit you in the present. If you want self-awareness: Examine yourself, your actions, your beliefs, your feelings, your dreams, your desires, your relationships. Three things, mainly. One, I learn from highly conscious people. I read what I can find from writers, bloggers, and other figures who strike me as wise and conscious. Tolle, Thoreau, Emerson, Kabat-Zinn, Steve etc. Eckhart Tolle's work has been the most helpful for me. Two, I observe how I think. I identify repetitive, egotistical thoughts I have and figure out how to respond to them. IMO nothing facilitates this examination process better than mindfulness meditation. Just conscious attention-paying... observe your thoughts like you would external sounds or sights. Three, I observe how human beings behave in general. I notice what makes people upset, agitated, pleased or rapt. I figure we're all pretty much the same in the reasons behind our behavior. |

Here's what this person does daily: 1) Meditate 2) Become the Witness and observe the body and mind's reaction to outside and inside stimuli 3) Stay in the moment 4) Stay non-judgmental 5) Meditate 6) Be thankful |

David, Both you and I seem to do the same. It's nice to see I am not the only one who observes others in this way. I also spend much of my day in contemplation, both of self and life in general. | |

I just learned something over the weekend. Instead of looking at life front where our "external" eyes are, watch life as if your eyes where at the very back of your head looking outward. So you are not only observing life, but also observing your role in it as well. You SEE your actions, behaviors, words, just as clearly as you watch and observe others. I am very familiar with self observation and being aware of myself. But this explanation of it seems to help keep it more constant. To learn how to observe life from that place in every moment. |

I increase my awareness by giving up the notion that I need to increase my awareness. Chasing it makes it a chase. But even the act of willingly giving up wanting to be more aware is part of the chase. Approach it indirectly. I don't try to make more awareness by focusing on being more aware - rather I do things that make the space for it or gets me into being alive and joyful. The awareness is a side effect. But really, anything that reduces stress. |
