Readers of this forum will probably resonate with most of the guidelines in my Field Guide to Bad Religion. My blog is getting kind of popular with alternate religion/atheist/agnostic types, so I'll probably be writing more like this. Feedback always appreciated. cheers, Angus |

Hey Angus, Your field guide was a pretty good read! Point number three I found to be especially true: "Does your religion frown on pleasure? Isn’t that a little… ungrateful?" I've got a non-religious but catholic-raised friend who still feels pervasive guilt for every pleasurable thing she does. She is programmed to be ashamed of pleasure and has such a difficult time shaking it. I guess certain religious institutions could not resist the immense political power made possible by implementing all sorts of guilt-driven shouldn'ts and do-nots on what is supposed to be divine. Too bad, they miss out on a lot, I think. I like your blog, I just subscribed. |

Thanks David, I'm glad you like the blog! Re: anti-pleasure… man, that's a common one. I see it everywhere, and had it myself to some extent when I was a fundamentalist. Tell your friend I was able to reprogram myself by consciously diving into all sorts of things I used to consider taboo, like cigar smoking and poly sex. I've settled down a bit now, but am much the better for having been a conscious hedonist for a while. But her mileage may vary, of course. cheers, Angus |

angus, I like your field guide! I always like to point out, if you want to get into a endless discussion about something, talk religion... I'm a practicing human being. I don't follow any sect or cult or any other breakaway belief. I follow my heart and mind. Look at the world from an outsiders eyes and see the ignorance that can be spread in the name "OF". I became ill a few years back and almost died. The resulting person you see in me is the result of something I don't really understand but accept with my heart because I feel right to myself. A friend of mine said I might have seen the "other side" I know I don't fear death anymore. It's not difficult to know what is right or wrong in us. I don't need to prescribe to the factions out there who feel that they are put on this planet to save us all from ourselves. If more people would just step back, imagine how really insignificant we are in the universe, they might just take the time to enjoy what they really could have out of life...now...
