Default Suicide can be a good thing...

Suicide has been up here quite a few times. Although it is a dangerous thing to debate, it is possible to twist these thoughts into something constructive....

Well, I would never recommend anybody to commit suicide in the physical sence, but use these thoughts to kill the mental picture of yourself and start from a fresh, all over. The old you with all its misery is dead and gone. The pain is no more... Every day from this point and onwards is a bonus.

Being on the edge can be a very powerful experience, with nothing to loose, there is everything to gain....

It's not always the view of the self that needs to be changed. Usually it's just the view of the world. But I agree with you that a person must change a part of themselves in order to live a more contented life, even if it is something as simple as perception.

Default The view of the world?

Don't watch/read the news, it is so loaded with negativity and it blows everything out of proportions. You can't save the world anyway, but you can adapt your own sense of reality to fit a suitable perspective of things, which will make your world worth while.

Look at things here and now, which specific problem prevents you from being happy in this very moment?

It has been interesting to attempt a response when someone wants to kill themselves or when a friend has killed themselves.

Automatically, I ask myself, "Well, why do I keep going?"

Life becomes immediate. "Why the hell am I here?"

I know that unless I can get to the root of the question, my answer to that person will be superfluous.

In a thread that I believe got deleted I said, "Be reborn in the moment, breathing, accepting life as it is with an open heart."

That is the best I could come upon without resorting a particular belief system or long-winded speech about why you should continue life.

I totally disagree with this viewpoint. Being aware of the world around us can give our lives a sense of proportion, realize how insignificant we really are. It stops us becoming too introspective, selfish and thinking the world revolves us.

There are now so many news outlets that in a Western country you should have no difficulty getting a balanced view of what is happening - social networking has increased the transparency and availability of news.

Just because "negative" events are reported it doesn't follow you have to absorb negativity. You can even use news as a positive, to reinforce the good things in your life - i.e. your not living in Gaza or wherever.

You may not be able to save the world, but that doesn't mean you cannot contribute or make a difference.

Wonderful way to put this! I hope you don't mind if I share it with others. I come across people from time to time who struggle with wanting to end their lives.

I've been there and done that, so I know the power of changing your life by changing your thoughts. This is a powerful way to word it that I think could be helpful to lots of others

I don't think the experience of pain and misery is something to just throw away. In fact, committing suicide after going through a lot of hardship is like saying that it was all for nothing. Not to mention that it spits in the face of all the people who spent time teaching you, like your parents.

If I hadn't gone through hardship, I would be a much weaker person. So in that sense, I'm thankful for it.

I'm not saying it is not true (mostly) what the media brings, but the fact is that bad news sell, people wants to be able to say: "Good it is not me" or feel the rush from being informed with something really terrible. Some people even watch death and mutilation, voluntarily as entertainment!

However having a good life, in relative terms, gives no meaning at all.
Even worse, a really bad consciousness can develop. "All my problems are imaginary luxury problems."
If a problem is perceived as a problem, it is a problem, no matter what, period. The issue is the reality of the perception.

You can have empathy for the whole world, but do little. You can however help your neighbour and be kind and helpful to people around you, that does actually make a world of difference.

When I “need” news I scroll a news list, that is usually fully sufficient to know if world war III or something worse has erupted

Sure, but past is past, little to do about it. You can just open that box when you need to. It makes no sense to live with your head in the box

Well, to my experience, most parents do a real ♥♥♥♥♥♥ job, but with all the right intentions...
