Hi! The concepts of consciousness and awareness confuses, what's the main difference between consciousness and awareness ? Also I've noticed that when I'm doing things I don't WANT to do, such as just lying on my bed and daydreaming and playing flash games on the internet I feel like I'm on "autopilot" so living consciously mean that I turn of that autopilot and actually do something ? Thanks! |

I conceive consciousness to be like a substance, that same as you could consider the mind to be a substance. Awareness is a state of being, you be in awareness. In this state your ability to perceive externally and internally is much more active. Essentially your consciousness or essence becomes more active. |

In more esoteric terms, we could describe consciousness as the affirmation of our existence itself -- the unextinguishable "I AM" that comprises our spiritual beingness. Being on "autopilot" can sometimes be useful. It is the result of dissociation. It occurs sometimes because of boredom, but more specifically, because of a repeating set of cognitive objects (thoughts). When we perform a repetitive function, we eventually "learn it", and it doesn't require all of our mental energy to perform that task anymore, so the "robot" part of your mind on autopilot can perform the repetitive task, and the "witness" part of your mind can do something else that requires more awareness to perform. Spiritually, there is great value living in the moment. Sometimes we get so used to letting the robot mind manage our affairs, that we also let it manage the moments we'd rather be fully conscious of. Sometimes we have to stop ourselves, make sure we are fully present, and smell the roses. Life can be magical if we allow it to be. To me, that is what "living consciously" is about.

There may be differences between consciousness and awareness, or there may be no differences between consciousness and awareness...whoever uses the terms, you must ask what they mean to understand what they are saying. Living consciously is another concept entirely...living consciously also does not necessarily mean doing anything, just being aware of what is happening - as opposed to being unconscious of what is going on.
