Experiment with sleep! When you stay aware while your body becomes asleep you get in a hypnagogic state in which you will halluzinate. Attention: This might be a scary experience!

Hallucinating is a unique experience, but like lasti said it can be pretty scary.

There are obviously drugs you can use (peyote, shrooms, acid, etc.) but that's sort of defeating the purpose; why damage your body when you are trying to better yourself? Go for an old-fashioned vision quest.

I doubt you access to a sweat lodge, but the basic premise is simple. Head out to a place in the wild where you won't be disturbed, bringing enough water to hold you over for 2 days or so. Don't eat, don't sleep, fast and stay awake for about two days and you'll see some weird stuff, if you put yourself in the right mindset. It isn't like "Hey let's hang out in the woods for a couple days!", it's supposed to be a spiritual experience.

Indians used to do it as a coming-of-age kind of thing. From personal experience, don't drive home by yourself unless you get rested and have food waiting for your return!

Default a note of caution and preparation

I would be wary of a *potion* or something to that effect, it sounds too much like logging onto WoW [world of warcraft].

Friends described shrooms, lsd, to me in this manner. There are many states of consciousness. Not taking into regard the adverse chemical affects they have on the body, alcohol, pot, shrooms, and lsd are all drugs that induce different states of consciousness.

It'd be much better to be drunk the first time with friends, people who have your back, right? The same [more-so] with a hallucinogenic drug. You are the same person when experiencing the drug induced change of consciousness-- yet you think a bit differently about things, experience emotion differently. A lot of the experience is created through your environment and what people tell you ahead of time about it... if you are hyped up thinking you are going to see things and go crazy, you just might.

I always, from the first time i drank or did anything else, tried to separate the drug's effects from the hype about the drug's effects. Shrooms and acid both definitely give you sight of motion where there is none --- walls moving slightly, as if they're breathing. A ceiling fan in my room, making a tapestry move a little, makes the colors seem as if they're dancing. What's more curious to me is their effect on your thought process... not that you're thinking better, in any way, but you think differently about the same things you've been going through recently.

I would recommend it, but with caution, and with discretion towards the hype of the drug and who is around when you trip. Too many are willing to mess with a person and subtly mock them while they are *less sober* in any way.

good luck, buena suerte, bonne chance...

Buying a shroom growing kit might be worth a try. Don't know if they are available/legal where you live.
You say that you want to hallucinate. That's seeing things that are not there. For what reason? The term hallucinogen is a little bit misleading. You won't see pink elephants or stuff, it's more about a shift in consciousness from what i heard - like Poiesis posted.

I think the more important question is "why do you want to hallucinate?"

you can hallucinate or shall i say, experience everything with a richer visual enhanced vision without buying anything.
let your blood sugar drop.. and listen to repetitive music for a long time..
what i did was just listen to a led zepplin song for about.. 3 hours straight, over and over.. it became background music while i was painting.
anyway go out into the closest thing you have to nature.. take water with you though.
it may help if you've practiced meditation before.

Don't bother hallucinating, life is already awesome in it's natural state, you just need to realise it. You need to try and add stuff to it.

Do you really want to? I have illnesses, and it wasn't fun when I used to do it. It's scary. I can't see why people try to do it with drugs and such.

If you go without sleep for 72 hours, supposedly you begin to hallucinate.

So far so good....

I was with you up to that point.

Please do not equate Hambleyca with some cheap thrill seek. The Vision Quest (Hambleyca = "Crying for a Vision") is a very sacred rite passed down for over a thousand years generation to generation. It is not some "coming-of-age thing."

Going out into the woods starving yourself and calling it a Vision Quest is like going to the YMCA, sitting in their sauna and saying you've "done a sweat lodge."

If halucinations are the only goal, then go without water for about three days and THEN go sit in the sauna at the Y for about an hour. Make sure your body temperature is at least 104, preferablly closer to 106.

I PROMISE you'll halucinate.

Course, you may die too, or at least end up in the hospital, but hey, at least you didn't do drugs right?

Going into the woods in some ridiculous imitation of Hambleyca is just as foolish as Drugs or what I mentioned above. If one is truly trying to better oneself, then one needs to seek within themselves with guidance. Preferably guided by someone with nearly a lifetime's worth of training, learning and practice behind them.

Certainly not the internet.

This is true. I used to do this for painting sessions. Sleep dep. painting sessions always turn out successful.

The blood sugar dropping is true too.

It really affects your thought process. As in, you can't really have one anymore... You need to have A LOT of free time on your hands to not sleep or eat for a few days, and it probably isn't the healthiest way to go.

From experience, I would recommend not using drugs. Not that I haven't had important experiences that I am grateful for as a result of drug-induced states, but I feel now that I was extremely unprepared to put myself in such a vulnerable situations. Naturally inducing the same feelings is a much better way to go. It may be a slower route, but more effective on the long run. Start meditating.

i occassionally suffer from sleep paralysis

and i found my self hallucinating from that...

i was more likely to hallucinate when sleeping in an uncomfortable place

like on a sofa....

so far, i woke up with a fox sitting on my lap and a new song in my head

and another time i woke up seeing people in white robes on a television screen and then realising the television was off, lol

not that exciting really....

but then it didn't last long, seems like lucid dreaming would be more fun

I've taken hallucingens before - and looking back and making comparisons, nothing better to achieve an altered state of consciousness than deep meditation. Nothing but great side effects, no potential legal ramifications, and you aren't introducing harmful chemicals into your body.

Anyone familiar with the "third eye"? Amazing!

Default Depends on what type of experience...

The type of hallucinations you have depends upon the type of experience you want to have. If you are looking towards a shamanic experience, I would recommend staying natural.

Ayahuasca
Salvia Divinorum
Peyote
Psilocybin

I would recommend a period of cleansing (vegetarian diet) for a couple of days before you journey and then the day of stick with small, light, vegan meals of fruits and vegetables, to keep you comfortable and your energy state high.

The reason for a shamanic journey using an outside hallucinogenic substance is simply a tool to introduce you to the spirit world. This is not a substitute for mediation and the cultivation of inner essence. Do your research and remember to have an experienced, sober sitter when you are hallucinating to keep your body safe and relatively relaxed. Try to have an affirmation ready and recited when you hallucinate to gain maximum benefit and most important of all keep an open mind.

Cheers!

Psilocybin mushrooms are probably the safest way to hallucinate. Definitely safer than starving yourself.

They can be cultivated indoors fairly easily but this is highly illegal in most places. If it is not illegal in your area, you can learn how at Shroomery - Magic Mushrooms (Shrooms) Demystified.

Salvia divinorum is still legal in most locales but less is known about it and its physiological effects.

You may hear about Datura inoxia, but this is a toxic deleriant and there is no safe way to use it.

Before you take any drug at all, read as much as possible about it from a reliable source like erowid.org or lycaeum.org. Many drugs can be used responsibly, but that means doing your homework.

Salvia Divinorum = total temporary loss of ego.

Not a kids toy to be played around with lightly.

The one thing about salvia is that unless you grow your own, or have access to un-dried leaf, it pretty much has to be smoked. The trip from smoked salvia is super intense but doesn't last very long. Somewhere along the line I think an experiment with salvia and an M.A.O.I. would be in order due to M.A.O.I.'s preventing the body from breaking down hallucinogenic substances as fast.

Just a thought.

Cheers!
