Default Who is Talking?

I am reading a book that was shared in this community (The Most Direct & Rapid Means to Eternal Bliss) and quite frankly don't get the concept very well. Somehow you have to be aware of your Awareness. In any case, one question came to my mind when I was reading it: If I have an ego-driven thought and afterwards a voice comes up and says "Shut up ego, my True Self has nothing to do with you", then who exactly is talking: the intellect, the True Self, or is this the awareness the author is talking about? Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

I've also wondered about who the speaker is. Your sentence above is a judgement, so I would say it is the ego speaking. Awareness observes the thoughts without judgement and allows the thoughts to float by. That's my understanding.

Dancer is correct. It's the ego looking like a different awareness.

Interesting; and if I acknowledge the ego at work than who is acknowledging the ego's presence?

Wouldn't it be just like the ego to acknowledge itself?

So you guys are all saying that there is no way to attain liberation with knowledge, perception & experience. I have a hunch that this is not true, but I am happy to be convinced otherwise.

Many thanks!

Your true self. True spiritual enlightenment needs no thoughts, no judgement, no anything...just observation. So when you notice yourself just being able to observe a situation without judgement..than you are creating more of your true self. Which some call god-consciousness, awareness, spirit, ect.

Recall times of fun and absorption. These are not characterised by striving and superiority. Our true self is very close (we live on the edge of glory, as the Celtic christians used to say).

I came upon this practice called the Hua Tou (Hwa Twa), which means "top of sentence". It's from Chan Buddhism. What you do is take a question like the one you just asked "Who is speaking?" and instead of answering it, you look at that moment right before the question pops in your mind.

Perhaps this is what the author is speaking of.
