A little while ago, Steve wrote a list of books he suggested we take a look at in the broad topic of personal development... You may remember the list, it spanned a number of areas. So I printed the list and took it to the library (including the hand-written additions I tacked on post-print!). I read a few of them (The Alchemist, The Celestine Prophecy, etc), and I got totally hooked! I was wondering which books you guys could recommend I check out on the topics of consciousness (individual and global) & awareness. The list is so extensive I think I have to narrow it down with personal recommendations! |

“The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz is a book that describes how we form beliefs based on fear. When we change our agreements, we can change our lives. All of his books have had a big impact on me. If you can't find a book you are looking for at your local library, ask them about inter-library loan. They can usually get them in for you.

Definitely Castenda and the Four Agreements. My Uber llist goes something like that: The Kybalion, The Three Initiates. Corpus Hermeticum. The Sirius Connection, Murry Hope and most likely anything by her. Illusions: The Sotory of a Reluctant Messiah, Richard Bach. The Alchemist, Paolo Coelho. siddhartha, Herman Hess. The Nature of Personal Reality, Seth. Fingerprints of the Gods, Hapgod (I believe). The Hiram Key, Christopher Knight and most books by him and his co-author sound great. Tao Te King. Baghavat-Gita. Upanishad. The Egyptian Book of the Dead and Living. The Tibetant Book of the Dead and Living. Popol Vuh Most early Christianity books. and the list goes on Last edited by 33Nick; 11-04-2006 at 09:56 PM. |

I've mostly read Tolle's Power of Now and A New Earth, and also some of A Course in Miracles. Mostly I use them to sort of ground myself when getting carried away with something, like reading a lesson or two in ACIM before going out in the morning. I look forward to reading more, like the books by Castaneda for example, but will have to keep reminding myself that all of these books are ultimately pointing to the same thing. It's easy to get lost in chasing new ideas and the next big book, thinking that there's something more to learn when there really isn't. |

Seriously, The Bhagavad Gita is probably one of the first books i would to recommend any one to read....Its a total lifechanger....It has great principles with very convincing examples. It inspires me when i am down, and is my refuge in times of distress. The upanishads too, are a great souce of strength. All you people out there, get urselves a copy of the Gita - Its far from being just a religious book... But one small reminder - The principles may be kind of new and subtle, but fuse them into your paradigm, and you shall see the changes. |

Let's see, I echo Power v. Force (not that I'm constantly asking what number anything is at, but it's a wonderful framework to think about our states of mind and our journeys to enlightenment), the Power of Now (which I am rereading), the Bhagavad-Gita, and most books by Serge King. I'll have to try A New Earth. I've gotten some great ideas from this thread. Some others:

Wow, to all of you that responded - thank you so much! I'm gonna print this page off and take it with me the next time I get a chance to visit my library. I really appreciate your responses; that personal recommendation was exactly what I was looking for!! |
