Default brainwave technology

Hi,
Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with the new binaural type brainwave technologies ?
I came across this one today and am interested, wondering if it's just hype, or if it really can work.

Immrama Institute - Awaken your mind's infinite potential

Thanks,
Floyd

The answer would be both Yes and No.

No, it is not a magic pill that will solve all your problem.
Yes, it has a physical effect on your brain that is advantagous in some situations.

Transparent Corporation is a website that sells brainwave entertainement not as a magic pill but provides the science around it and has a great forum.

Interesting, I checked the site out, and it seems they actually provide less science and more of a magic pill than the site I posted.
This from their website:
Using neural stimulation outlined below, you can induce altered states in your own brain quickly, giving you easy access to the rarest mental states known to mankind - states many people typically spend lifetimes trying to achieve. Using our software or audio CD collections, you can re-create altered state brainwave patterns in your own mind, producing anything from lucid dreams to out of body experiences

My mother is a Neurophysiologist who started out as one of the first EEG (Electroencephlagraph) Technicians to be liscensed in this country. I grew up being her guinea pig. Every time some new procedure or theory came along, she'd haul me into the lab, glue electrodes to my head and run me through the process to help her establish her baselines for future studies or verifications of whatever she was reading about or working on herself.

I can tell you from absolute personal experience that brainwave technology is very real. Biofeedback is very real. The power of the mind is very real.

The mind has the power to completely alter the reality around you (or at the very least your perception of it). You can heal yourself with it, you can harm yourself with it, you can do "supernatural" things, simply by thinking about it in the right "frame of mind".

There are technologies that help induce the correct brainwave activity that makes people more able to do these types of things. I was a very real part of the infancy of this science. I learned how to slow my heartrate by listening to a beep and matching my pulse to the sound. I could enter altered states of consciousness by controlling the type of brainwaves I was emitting (alpha, theta, beta, delta, etc.) All these things are scientifically verifiable.

All this was back in the '70's. I can only imagine the lengths to which it has been developed today. My mother has since gotten out of the R&D realm and now assists surgeons by monitoring brain activity during neuro surgery, so my link to that aspect of science has dried up.

That being said, I am equally sure that there are a lot of people out there who will tout this technology as a sure-fire way to do whatever. And that is NOT the case. You still have to do the work. You still have to make it happen. These things only help you get to a mental space that makes it easier.

I'm very dubious of any company selling anything, but that goes triple for those that claim something "miraculous" is possible simply by buying their product.

Do you believe these mp3's can alter your state just by listening to them?

Yes. But what you DO with that altered state is really the question.

Thanks for the feedback. I have long been a believer of bio-feedback, since I first learned about it, back in the 70's. I never did it, but it makes perfect sense to me. I always wanted to do it, but haven't. I understand how you can learn to induce different brain waves that way.

This process is different than biofeedback. Even less to do. It supposes that the brain itself will mimic the resultant frequencies being fed into it through the ears. Lets say you want theta waves ( ~35 hz or somethign like that I think ). Maybe the frequency in one ear is set to 200hz and the other ear is set to 165 hz. According to this, the brain tends to subtract the difference and hear a sort of harmonic at 35 hz, and then will adjust it's own waves to that frequency.

There supposedly is a lot of long term science behind it, and it does make sense to me.

I too am hesitant about some of the ones I've seen that have a different cd for all different kinds of visualizations or states of being etc... But a simple brain wave trainer seems plausible to me.

What I am hoping is to get the benefits of the relaxation, and to get a taste of those states, in order to help me achieve them without the aid of anything.

In a way though, I am even more hoping that being conscious while in such relaxed states, I may be able to have creative breakthroughs in realizing the power of now.

I think you can do that without spending money on some CD. I'm big on not spending money I don't have to. You may have plenty of funds to do whatever you want, but my finances are limited. It's like people who buy cases of bottled water instead of grabbing a glass and turning a tap... doesn't make sense to me. But that's just me.

Go to the library and check out a book or two on various meditation techniques. They do exactly the same thing and they're free. I like free.

Alternatively, find a good Yoga instructor. If you're going to spend money, you might as well get as much bang for your buck as possible. A good Yoga instructor will help you meditate as much as exercise your body. "Two birds with one stone."

Binaural brainwave technologies can really work. But they are NOT a magic pill. And their effectiveness depends on the person.

I recommend you to go to Bwgen. There you will find a free shareware program that generates brainwaves and you can use it for 30 days for free.

fyi: theta is like 4 -8 hertz

the two different tones played in different ears sets up a "beat frequency" that only your brain is hearing since these tones are supposed to be purely in one ear and the other individually. 400 hertz in the left and 406 hertz in the right, for example, will cause an interference pattern or "beat frequency" of the difference, being 6 hertz in this case.

also, I've heard just using a metronome works too. listen to a beat that works out to 6 hertz and you could get brain wave entrainment.

I think what happens is your brain's energy, as it listens to the sounds (either with the internal beat frequency or the metronome pulse) pulses as well because your brain's neurons have to fire to listen. This firing will be at that certain frequency and then you have a chance to have most of your brain waves to sync into the frequency you are listening.

I love using Hemi-Sync products....

I have several of their CDs:

Indigo For Quantum Focus is what I have in now.

Also:

Mobius West (Creates the reality you desire)

Sleeping Through the Rain (for sleep)

Dreamcatcher (sleep)

Hemi-Sync in Motion (for energizing workouts)

Illumination For Peak Performance

___________

Some of them are experiments in new gamma brain wave stimulation. But I can't remember which now.

Their site is www.hemi-sync.com and their research is out of the Monroe Institute which was founded by the brilliant modern-day renaissance man Robert A Monroe. (The Monroe Institute)

Hello Everyone.....

I tried it.

I'm seein nothing from it. This is a perfect scam because it can't be proven wrong. They should sell this with cure all elixers. If it ever worked, it was a placebo. I wanted it to work and tried it for several days. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Don't waste your money. Think about it. He's sitting in his house recording nonsense sound, labeling it "Intense Focus", then scamming people to pay for it. How can you label a sound like that? How do you know (even if it did work) it would cause the same reaction in everyone? Use affirmations or hypnosis. At least you get something out of it.
Dannyboy makes sense from this because if you notice, with some of the titles like that, there is no mention of any testing with subjects and the results, just a title and a suggestion that it will cause that. That convinces people that all they have to do is just listen and they will become creative, learn faster, etc... did they actually test anyone with the sounds and measured results with the title in mind? Or just came up with a new sound and felt it would work as it claimed?

I have experience in listening to them and it is true you can have some bizarre or interesting experiences.

However, if you simply just listen you may most likely just fall asleep, or the opposite, get bored, feel nothing is happening and quit. A habit I once fell in.

The main idea is to have a purpose or goal for listening and then be determined to keep yourself alert while listening.... Or if you want to just explore the state, then do the same as above and practice staying alert for longer and longer periods of time.... One good way to take advantage of these programs is to have a clear goal you want to accomplish while in the state......

To do this you have to practice regularly, just like learning to play the piano, until you learn how and get used to it. Then you may find it very easy to remain awake and alert while listening to beat program that has for example delta waves on it...

It can be fun, to explore this way, but like you said, fwellers, another good use is to then recreate the same states without the listening, and that can be done while you practice by performing some gesture or word like putting your finger and thumb together as you count from 5 to 1, or just utter a word repeatedly, like "relax"....

If you want to get any results from it, you will have to put your brain, goals and effort into it....

Thanks for the excellent replies. As I suspected, there are total sceptics, believers in it, and some good advice.
I am looking forward to giving it a shot. Heck, for $40, which is less than I can spend for one meal out with my wife, it will not be money wasted.

I am glad to see that some have gotten some good use out of these type products. As Night Diamond and Mato Kinze said, I think how it's used, and the effort put into it can make a difference in how much use the tool can provide.

Even if it gets me in the habit of meditation/relaxing/some mental discipline, it will have provided an invaluable service to me.

I'm glad I asked and received advice from you all.

Thanks,
Floyd
