Hello. I found this quotation just now and (assuming it's true), I thought it was a nicely provocative statement: I learn that ten percent of all the world's species are parasitic insects. It is hard to believe. What if you were an inventor, and you made ten percent of your inventions in such a way that they could only work by harnessing, disfiguring or totally destroying the other ninety percent? -Annie Dillard, author (b. 1945) I'm not making any further statement, and I don't know where she gets her numbers, but I thought I'd let people pound it out anyways. Probably bad timing, with the holydays and all, but well, enjoy? |

Strange isn't it? I'm trying to think of anything man-made which directly adversely affects something else, and could only operate that way. Can't come up with anything though. We've created much that harnesses or consumes, but only inanimate substances, nothing alive. And we're even trying to progress beyond powering our creations by using fuel which was once alive. One possible argument is that the parasites provide benefits in return for their sustenance. Perhaps it's The Noodle's way of showing us that sometimes the line between good and evil is not so clear and we have to be ever vigilant. |
