Your Thought on December 21, 2012

I hope this is the best place for this post. I'm not exactly sure where it fits to tell you the truth. I'm a research-a-holic, and my latest kick has been the predicition for 12-21-2012. Anyone else familiar with it?

I kind of thought it was a little "hokie" to tell you the truth, but now that I've been reading, and also thinking about the state of our world now and what could possible transpire in the next few years I'm starting to think there might be something to it.

What do you think about it?

i think that if it's supposed to happen then it will. If not, then we will enjoy Christmas. Either way, there's nothing we can do to change what is meant to be, so why worry about it?

By the term the "THE END", it only means it's the end of a cycle/phase. Another phase is beginning. It's a process.

It is possible that 2012 may be my graduation date. But I'm thinking 2011. It's too bad; 2012 would be a much cooler class year.

I personally doubt that the world will 'end' that soon. Things would have to happen really quickly. Just look back through history, and you'll see people talking about the 'end of the world', seeing evidence for it everywhere. But at the rate we're going, expect some pretty ugly years ahead.

What's weird is that the Mayans, the I-ching, the Hopis and the Aborigines, among others, have prophesies surrounding this date. That kind of freaks me out, but there's nothing you can really do about it.

The most interesting theory of what might happen in 2012 I have heard is that there will be a magnetic pole reversal on earth. This theory speculates that human consciousness is inextricably tied to the magnetic field, so a change in the magnetic field could produce a mass-consciousness change (for the better?). Anyway, that would be rad.

There have been, at least according to this web site, no fewer than 220 end-of-the-world predictions by various prophets of doom at various times. Needless to say, so far they're running at a 100% failure rate, and there's no indication that any of the upcoming prognostications are any more valid than all the previous ones.

At some point, of course, the world will end. Current estimates figure it at about 5 billion years as the sun runs out of hydrogen fuel and bloats up like my ex father-in-law after Thanksgiving dinner.

What's also interesting is that the mayan calandere, one of the longest there is I think, stops at 2012

According to the Popol Vuh, a book compiling details of creation accounts known to the K'iche' Maya of the Colonial-era highlands, we are living in the fourth world.[7] The Popol Vuh describes the first three creations that the gods failed in making and the creation of the successful fourth world where men were placed. In the Maya Long Count, the previous creation ended at the start of a 13th b'ak'tun.

The previous creation ended on a long count of 12.19.19.17.19. Another 12.19.19.17.19 will occur on December 20, 2012, followed by the start of the thirteenth b'ak'tun, 13.0.0.0.0, on December 21, 2012.[8] It has been suggested in many New Age articles and books that this will be the end of this creation, the next pole shift or something else entirely (see novelty theory). In this age we are approaching the same count again, only there is a common misconception of the Maya's practice of abbreviating their dates to five decimal places. According to the Maya there will be a baktun ending in 2012, a significant event being the end of the 13th 400 year period, but not the end of the world.[9]

Maya stela occasionally show dates beyond 2012. Most of these are in the form of "distance dates", where a Long Count date is given with a distance date to be added. For example, on Tikal Stela 10 we find the following Long Count date: 9.8.9.13.0 8 Ahau 13 Pop (24th March 603 AD Gregorian) with a distance date of 10.11.10.5.8. The resulting date is given as 1.0.0.0.0.8 5 Lamat 1 Mol,[10] or 21st October 4772 AD – almost 3,000 years into the future. The king Pacal of Palenque predicted that on this date the eightieth Calendar Round anniversary of his accession will be celebrated, suggesting he did not believe the world would end in 2012.[11]

Despite the publicity generated by the 2012 date, Susan Milbraath, curator of Latin American Art and Archaeology at the Florida Museum of Natural History, stated that "We [the archaeological community] have no record or knowledge that [the Maya] would think the world would come to an end" in 2012.[12]

"For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies in Crystal River, Fla. To render Dec. 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."[13]

In other words, the only thing that will happen is that another 'Long Count' cycle will begin.

I see the run-up to 2012 and through it as a time of exponentially increased consciousness much like the 600-550BCE axial era and 1500CE. This time though it's going to be a collective consciousness that ushers in a new age. As to all the other physical stuff such as the crossing of the galatic plane and the like, I can't disagree with the limited intelligence I have. If we make it to the next 5 billion years, i'm sure we will already be able to overcome the sun problem. We will probably already be millions of light years away, in another fresh young solar system with a fresh young planet just like earth is now.

We like to think that we are at the technological top of the civilization, but we are really just in a very very primitive pre history, comparing to our future civilization.

I couldn't agree more Sam. We only "think" we're the sharpest saw in the tool box becuase we've not yet been able to figure out what previous advanced civilizations knew. If the people who are working on the Horizon Project (Brent Miller) are right, electricity, batteries, brain surgery, etc, was all done eons ago. One day we'll figure it out- one day we'll know.
